Processing times (guide only)

We typically take one week to complete undergraduate applications. If you've applied for a credit transfer (recognition of prior learning) the processing time will be longer. These processing times are only a guide. The actual times vary by programme.

Please note that during peak admission periods (October-February, June-July), documents may take longer to process and assess.

The AUT admissions team will:

  • Check that your application is complete, for example no missing documents. We will contact you by email if we need more information. You can find all our correspondence to you on Arion.
  • Assess your application against the entry criteria and any other specific requirements for your programme of interest. We consider your academic history and relevant experience to set you up for success in your programme
  • Email you an application outcome letter. If you don’t meet all the criteria, we’ll give you alternative options that could help you reach your career goals

These are the main application outcomes you can expect to receive within one week of your application:

Offer of Place

We would like to offer you a place to study at AUT. You have been successful in your application, and your next step is to accept your offer.

There are 3 parts to a contract of enrolment with AUT - your Admission Letter, your Offer of Place, and the Student Agreement. The Offer of Place document contains a link to the Student Agreement.

Provisional Offer of Place

You have met some of the criteria for entry to your chosen programme of study and we would like to offer you a provisional place to study at AUT. School leavers who are waiting for NCEA/CIE/IB exam results will likely receive a provisional offer of place.

If you don’t meet the requirements, for example University Entrance, then this offer will be withdrawn. You will be offered other study options wherever possible.

Declined

If you don't meet the entry requirements or all places have been taken, you will be offered other study options wherever possible. Check the decline letter for alternative study options.

To apply for any of the suggested programmes:

  • Log in to Arion using your AUT student ID and password
  • Choose Correspondence
  • Apply for a new programme

Request for Supporting Information

Your application is incomplete and further information is required. The information required will be listed. The processing of your application will only recommence once the information is provided.

Decision Pending

We’re unable to make a decision just yet but will contact you to let you know when we expect this to happen. This outcome usually indicates that you have applied for a programme that has limited places and requires assessment of your final results, or that your application requires faculty approval.

Waitlist

Applicants for high-demand health programmes like physiotherapy and oral health may be placed on a waitlist. You will be placed on a waitlist if you haven't secured a direct entry place or if all places are filled. Places on the programme may become available up to the start of semester and applicants will be contacted if a place does become available.

Respond to your offer

Accept your offer

If you have received an Offer of Place or a Provisional Offer of Place you can accept your offer immediately. Accepting your offer of place does not mean you have entered into any financial contract with AUT. You won't be invoiced for fees until you enrol in courses later in the process.

Accepting your offer early means you're saving your place in the programme.

To accept your offer

Log into Arion using your AUT student ID and password.

Follow these instructions once you’re logged into Arion:

  • Choose Academic Details
  • Below Programme Information choose View Offer of Place

Now that you’ve accepted your offer, it’s a good time to familiarise yourself with student life at AUT. You’ll find information for new students, accommodation, getting around campus, learning systems and tools and much more.

To delay your study

Things can change. If this isn’t the right time for you to study, you can postpone your study to a later semester. You will need to decline your offer and re-apply when you're ready to study. Log into Arion with your student ID and password to decline your offer.

To decline your offer

You can change your mind and decline an offer for one programme and accept one for another programmes on your list. Or, you may simply have changed your mind about studying at AUT. Log into Arion with your AUT student ID and password to decline your offer.

Paying fees

Fees-free study

If you're a domestic student and you haven’t undertaken tertiary study of more than 60 credits, you may be eligible for fees-free study.

To check if you’re eligible, visit the Tertiary Education Commission’s (TEC) Fees Free website and enter your National Student Number (NSN) or read the full eligibility criteria. The site describes what to do if you don’t have an NSN.

Fees Free website

Eligibility criteria on Fees Free website

If your eligibility check says ‘yes’

You don’t need to do anything at this stage. The TEC will contact AUT directly and we will adjust your invoice automatically.

Your eligibility check says 'maybe'

If your eligibility check returns a 'maybe' status, follow the instructions given in the NSN checker on how to complete and return a statutory declaration. If you've already applied to AUT, we’ll continue to recheck your status daily until we receive confirmation of your eligibility (or ineligibility) from the TEC.

Your eligibility check says 'no'

Your eligibility check will return a 'no' if you fail to meet the criteria. Your enrolment will progress as normal, and AUT will tell you how to complete your enrolment and you’ll be sent your invoice.

StudyLink

Your student loan application will take a minimum of four weeks to be approved and paid. So you need to apply for your student loan or student allowance at least two months before your study starts. As soon as your student loan has been approved, StudyLink will contact AUT to request details of your course of study, and AUT will confirm your details with StudyLink to allow payment of fees directly to AUT.

Interested in research?

Interested in research as part of your degree?

Postgraduate degrees with a research component such as a dissertation or a thesis require a supervisor; a suitable academic from AUT to provide supervision and support for you as you conduct your research.

Postgraduate degrees that involve only taught courses - for example the Master of Applied Finance or the Master of Engineering Project Management - don't require a supervisor. Check the web page for your chosen AUT programme to see if your preferred programme is coursework only or involves conducting research.

If you're interested in conducting research to advance your knowledge, you can take advantage of the expertise of AUT’s specialist academics.

When to contact potential AUT supervisors

You don't need to contact academics at this stage of your application journey. Your next step is to apply for your programme. After you've applied, and your application has been assessed, you will be contacted by the faculty about your supervisor options.

Apply online or through an agent

Apply well before the semester starts.

Applications will be processed up to the start of the semester depending on programme availability. We recommend applying at least three months before the start of the programme to have the best chance of securing a place in your preferred programme.

It's easy to apply online but you can make it even easier by being prepared. You can start, pause and return to your application at any time. Your application is processed through Arion, AUT’s student information system.

Things to note when you apply online:

  • You can apply for more than one programme (up to five programmes)
  • Apply for your programmes in order of preference
  • You need to indicate your pathway (the structure of your programme such as the major(s) or main subject(s) you will study)
  • Initially, we will process your first preference programme, then if applicable we will assess other programmes later. You will be asked to contact the Student Hub if you want other programmes assessed

Keep a note of your password when you register your account during the application process. You will need it later when you log back in to track your progress.

Documents you need to supply as an international student

You will be asked to upload the following documents:

  • Passport or birth certificate (certified copies, not originals)
  • Official academic transcript and an English translation if applicable (certified copies)
  • Completion certificate from your secondary/high school (certified copies)

Depending on the programme you have chosen you may have to provide:

  • English test (for example IELTS Academic, TOEFL, Pearson)

AUT accepts certified digital academic documents from some online verification platforms.

You can find more information about providing supporting documents on the Applicant Support Hub.

Processing times (guide only)

We typically take one week to complete undergraduate applications. If you have applied for a credit transfer (recognition of prior learning) the processing time will be longer. These processing times are only a guide. The actual times vary by programme.

Please note that during peak admission periods (October-February, June-July), documents may take longer to process and assess.

What the admissions team does with your application

The AUT admissions team will:

  • Check that your application is complete, for example no missing documents. We will contact you by email if we need more information. You can find all our correspondence to you on Arion.
  • Assess your application against the international entry criteria and any other specific requirements for your programme of interest. We consider your academic history and relevant experience to make sure you can succeed in your programme
  • Email you an application outcome letter. If you don't meet all the criteria, we will give you alternative options that could help you reach your career goals

These are the main application outcomes that you can expect to receive within one week of your application:

Offer of Place

We would like to offer you a place to study at AUT. You have been successful in your application and your next step is to accept your offer.

There are 3 parts to a contract of enrolment with AUT - your Admission Letter, your Offer of Place, and the Student Agreement. The Offer of Place document contains a link to the Student Agreement.

These documents include:

  • Information about tuition and other compulsory fees
  • Insurance
  • When and how to pay your fees
  • Student visas
  • Where to find a copy of AUT’s refund policy

If you applied through an AUT registered agent all correspondence will be sent to them.

Conditional Offer of Place

You have met some of the criteria for entry to your chosen programme of study and we would like to offer you a conditional place to study at AUT. You need to meet some additional requirements such as English language (IELTS).

If you don't meet the rest of the requirements before the start of semester, then this conditional offer will lapse. You can request to defer this conditional offer if you need more time to fulfil the requirements.

Request for Supporting Information

Your application is incomplete and further information is required. The information required will be listed. The processing of your application will only recommence once the information is provided.

Declined

If you don't meet the entry requirements or all places have been taken, you will be offered other study options wherever possible. Check the decline letter for alternative study options. If you would like to find out more about alternative study options, simply complete the Future Student enquiry form.

To apply for any of the suggested programmes:

  • Log in to Arion using your AUT student ID and password
  • Choose Correspondence
  • Apply for a new programme

Decision pending

We’re unable to make a decision just yet but will contact you to let you know when we expect to make a decision. This outcome usually indicates that you have applied for a programme that requires faculty approval which can take a little more time.

Pay your fees

Receiving an Offer of Place does not guarantee your place – to guarantee your place you will need to pay all fees in full by the due date. Places are subject to availability so we advise you to pay your fees as soon as you can.

If all places in the programme are taken when you decide to pay the fees and accept the Offer of Place, we will offer you a place in the next available intake.

You need your fees receipt to apply for your student visa

We will send you an official receipt once we have received your payment. You need to upload this receipt along with a copy of your Offer of Place as part of your student visa application.

How to pay your fees

Updated fees

If your offer of place was issued with the estimated fees for the current year, then you will be notified when the new fees for your academic year are confirmed. At this stage you can request a new Offer of Place with the updated fees. You will be re-issued a new Offer of Place to accept with the new fees outlined in the offer. There will be a deadline to pay your fees stated in the letter or advice to pay immediately.

After you have applied, and your application has been assessed, you will be contacted by the faculty about your supervisor options.

After you have accepted your offer and before the semester starts, your AUT teaching department will email you, advising you how to enrol in your courses. This is where you select the courses needed to meet the requirements of your programme.

Review the enrolment information in the email from your faculty first, so that you understand what courses are required to complete your qualification.

Once you have logged into Arion web, you may be able to choose a preferred course from a list of options.
