Fees, dates and applying for Study Abroad
Our Study Abroad programme offers an incredible opportunity to study in New Zealand. Find out about programme entry requirements, study costs and start dates.
Entry requirements, application details, and fees and payment info
To ensure guaranteed accommodation, apply for both study and accommodation before the following dates:
- 30 November each year (to start in February/Semester 1)
- 31 May each year (to start in July/Semester 2)
You can apply for Study Abroad online. You'll need to have certain documents ready when you apply – the checklist below describes what you'll need.

Have these documents ready when you apply:
- Current passport that won’t expire while you are in New Zealand
- Official, current transcript
- IELTS results if applicable

Applying online
Complete the online form to apply for the Study Abroad programme. To choose the Study Abroad option in the form, you need to:
- In the “My programmes” page, choose “Study Abroad” as the category of study
- Choose your intake (in which semester you plan to start)
- Continue completing the form

Fees per semester for 2026
These prices are in New Zealand dollars.
- Tuition fee for Study Abroad: NZ$13,000 per semester (for 60 points at AUT)
- Work Integrated Learning Course Placement Management Fee: NZ$1,000
- Insurance per semester (6 months): NZ$449.50
- Student Services Levy*:
- NZ$458.10 per semester (45 credits)
- NZ$610.80 per semester (60 credits)

Entry requirements: getting into the AUT Study Abroad programme
You must meet these requirements before you apply:
- Completed at least one year of full-time study at a recognised university (or two years for the study-internship option) by the start date of the programme
- A better than average academic record, especially in your most recent year of study (or have a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the study-internship option)
- Meet English language requirements (if English is not your first language):
- Undergraduate: IELTS (Academic) 6.0 overall, with no band lower than 5.5
- Postgraduate: IELTS (Academic) 6.5 overall, with no band lower than 6.0
- Be at least 18 years of age. If you are younger, please contact AUT Study Abroad: study.abroad@aut.ac.nz
- Gap year students: If you have recently completed high school and are taking a break before starting university, please contact AUT Study Abroad to check your eligibility: study.abroad@aut.ac.nz

All Study Abroad students at AUT must have a valid student visa. You're responsible for obtaining the correct visa through Immigration New Zealand. We recommend that you apply for your student visa no later than 8 weeks before you intend to arrive in New Zealand.
