The Master of Business in Economics emphasises the skills most sought-after by employers, especially data analytics for business and policy. Our economics graduates are in high demand across the public and private sectors, both in New Zealand and around the world.

Our postgraduate students are an integral part of the academic life. You'll work with an academic supervisor on a research project, and could also work as a tutor or research assistant while you're studying at AUT. You’ll be joining a vibrant academic community, with access to the NZ Policy Research Institute and New Zealand’s world leading Integrated Data Infrastructure.

To graduate with a Master of Business in Economics, you must successfully complete 180 points from:

  • Specialisation courses
  • Research OR Research and electives

Full-time students would normally start this specialisation in Semester 1 (February).

If you choose the 90-point thesis you need to complete 30 points of electives chosen from the Master of Business, or another postgraduate degree with the approval of the programme director.

In some cases, a dissertation (60-points) can be completed instead of a thesis, depending on your pathway, with the approval of the programme director.

You can only enrol in the research component if you achieve a B- grade average or higher in your courses, have an approved research proposal, and supervision is available for your research.
