Take a break from study
Sometimes circumstances mean that you need to have some time away from your studies. If you need to be away from AUT for a semester or more, and the AUT programme you’re studying is at least 120 points, you can apply for a leave of absence and pause your place in your AUT programme.
If you just stop studying without telling your school or faculty, you could lose your place in your programme permanently. AUT can cancel your enrolment, and if you want to come back later, you'd have to reapply with no guarantee of getting back in.
How do I apply for a leave of absence?
A leave of absence is a formal, temporary pause to your studies for a specific time period.
To apply for a leave of absence, follow this process:
- Apply to the faculty/school assessment board before the enrolment period you’re seeking leave from starts
- A leave of absence can’t normally be longer than two consecutive teaching periods (for example two semesters)
- The assessment board will consider your circumstances and decide if you’re eligible for a leave of absence
You can find more details about conditions for a leave of absence in the AUT Calendar.
Things you need to consider if you’re taking a leave of absence
- When you return from leave, you might not be able to get into the same courses if they're full
- If you’re an international student, taking a leave of absence could impact your student visa and ability to stay in New Zealand – you should check with Immigration New Zealand
What is the deadline to apply for a leave of absence?
You must normally apply for a leave of absence before the teaching period you’re seeking leave from starts (before the start of the semester).
Does this impact my fees?
Yes – your studies and any fees payments will be paused while you’re on a leave of absence.
