Deferring your studies

Sometimes the timing just isn’t right. If you’ve received an Offer of Place but need to start later, you can defer your studies and come back when things feel more settled.

Domestic students

To defer your studies to a later intake:

  • Log into My AUT
  • Your applications are shown on the homepage
  • If you don’t see them, go to the My Account tab and select My Applications
  • Find the application you want to defer

What you see next will depend on how far your application has progressed:

  • If a Withdraw or Cancel option is showing, select that option
  • If Review Offer is showing, select the arrow at the end of the button and choose Decline Offer

When you’re ready to start studying, you’ll need to submit a new application. Check the semester start dates so you can plan ahead.

International students

If you’re an international student and need to defer your studies, you’ll need to submit a defer request form.

After you submit the form, our admissions team will review your request and let you know the outcome for your preferred intake.

If you’re an international student, remember that deferring your studies may affect your visa. Make sure you check what this means for you before confirming your plans.

What happens after you defer

Once your deferral is complete, your current application will be closed for that intake. When you’re ready to start studying, you’ll need to submit a new application for your preferred semester. This helps us make sure you’re considered with the most up to date information and entry requirements. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on key semester dates so you know when applications open for your chosen intake.
