Support for offshore students
Enrolled at AUT but studying from outside of New Zealand? Whether you’re currently doing your student exchange or workplace experience overseas, or you’re an international student who is based offshore, you can use a number of AUT services to make the most of your university experience and stay connected with the AUT community.
What is an offshore student?
You’re considered an offshore student if you’re currently enrolled in an AUT programme but are completing your studies outside of New Zealand. This includes:
- Domestic students studying overseas or on exchange with partner institutions
- International students enrolled with AUT and completing their courses or qualification offshore
- International students enrolled under a partnership agreement
- International and domestic students doing their work integrated learning overseas
- Study Abroad students or students completing exchange programmes
- Students studying with an approved offshore provider
Get the support you need for your studies from outside of New Zealand
The AUT Student Hub is the place to go for help with most student issues. It gives you access to a range of AUT services and support options to help you succeed even if you’re studying overseas.

Library
The library – Te Mātāpuna Library & Learning Services – provides online resources and support services to help you succeed your studies, and you can access these as an offshore student.
Learn how to improve in your assessments, cite research efficiently, understand your lecturers' feedback and develop a range of other skills.
Studiosity
Studiosity is an online help service that is available after-hours free of charge via Canvas. You can get guidance and feedback on your academic writing and support with foundation level content. Offshore students can use the Studiosity service up to six times during a semester.
Studiosity also offers one-to-one personal help in real-time – you can submit a question and work with a Studiosity study expert in the interactive classroom – with chat, collaborative whiteboard and file sharing*.
*Content support is mostly for level 5 courses and below
If you’re a disabled student currently studying from outside of New Zealand, you can access a range of online services and support, including:
- information about adaptive tools and resources
- Information on disability-related issues
- Advice about specialised equipment and computer software for independent learning
- Help and strategies for accessing lecture content and notes, like notes online
- Help to manage your study load
- Alternative arrangements for assessments and exams, like extra time or use of technology

Elab Online
Log into Employability Lab Online, where you can book into workshops, appointments, browse jobs and internships and download resources.
My CareerLab
Want to learn how your preferences and interests fit your career options? Keen to do job interview practice online or start a CV? You can find all this and more under the ‘Explore’ and ‘Focus’ sections of My CareerLab. You can also browse jobs. Log in with your AUT user name and password.
As an AUT student on a student exchange, you’ll have access to a range of support services while you study overseas. There’s a specific staff member appointed at our partner universities to take charge of student exchange students from AUT and they will make sure you’re being looked after.

Make the most of your host university
While you’re studying overseas, stay connected to your networks, friends and family and make the most of the services and networks your host university offers. Visit your host university’s website to find out what community, networking and personal support you can access while you’re studying with them.
If you’re an international student enrolled with AUT but studying from outside of New Zealand, AUT’s International Student Support team can offer advice on a range of topics. We can also provide guidance if you’re planning to come to New Zealand to continue your studies in the future.

As a postgraduate research student studying offshore, you have access to a range of support and resources, online events and researcher development activities.
We offer services and resources for students who identify with diverse sexual orientations, sex and gender identities, including for students studying offshore.

Multifaith and spiritual support
The AUT spirituality and chaplaincy service provides multifaith spiritual support to students from various faiths and beliefs – promoting taha wairua (spiritual wellbeing).
You can contact our chaplains from offshore.
Make the most of your local networks and community
Are you normally based at AUT but currently studying overseas? Stay connected to your networks, friends and family, and make the most of the services and networks the institution where you’re currently studying offers. Visit your institution’s website to find out what community, networking and personal support you can access through them.
AUT’s student association, AUTSA, advocates and represents the interests of all students at AUT. AUTSA is a proud supporter of the AUT Orientation, and you can connect with them on campus. As an AUT student, you’re automatically a part of AUTSA and have access to all the services and resources they offer.

My AUT is our online student portal. It’s your personalised space, with everything you need to stay up to date with what’s happening at AUT.

IT support: get your tech sorted from overseas
Being able to connect with AUT’s systems and tools from overseas is very important.

Stay connected
If you’re studying from overseas, staying connected to your studies, your classmates, lecturers and AUT helps you feel at home and makes your uni experience even better.
Tips to help you stay connected:
- Attend all your online class tutorials – you'll meet other students and can ask your lecturers questions
- Download the AUT App and use the community function, check out the latest AUT news, find out about events online and make bookings with support services
- Talk to the International Student Support or Student Exchange teams
- Use the tips and resources to look after your wellbeing
- Check if there are other AUT students in your area – check the AUT clubs site for any groups that meet up locally or online
