Civil Construction Engineering Major - Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)

Designing safe, cost effective and environmentally sustainable buildings and infrastructure is essential to our society. Professional civil engineers and construction engineers are involved with the design, planning and construction of the physical infrastructure that surrounds us.
Whether the project is high-density housing or commercial construction, these engineers design reliable processes and build quality structures. AUT’s civil construction engineering programme will help you develop skills for these highly rewarding careers.
This is part of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours).
If you’re studying civil construction engineering, you’ll develop skills in construction management, structural engineering, materials technologies, building information modelling, construction systems, productivity improvement and waste reduction strategies.
Most of your first-year courses are shared between the majors in the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and the Bachelor of Engineering Technology, making it easy for you to switch between our engineering degrees and majors.
You also need to complete 800 hours of planned, supervised work experience to graduate, in addition to completing all your courses. This experience exposes you to common engineering industry practices and helps you gain knowledge of engineering procedures, engineering responsibilities, and health and safety practices.

Your industry-based research project in Year 4 is your opportunity to gain real-life industrial experience in a civil construction engineering environment, under the guidance of an experienced supervisor.

Students who started at AUT before 2024
If you started your studies in this programme before 2024, the courses you need to complete are a little different. Updated study plans for current students in this programme will be available on Canvas. If you have questions about your study plan and what courses you should take, email engineer@aut.ac.nz
If you started in the Construction Engineering major before 2024, you can continue and complete this programme. To transfer into the new Civil Construction Engineering major you need to consider:
- The number of credits you receive depends on what courses can be crossed over
- In most cases you'll need to take extra courses to meet the requirements of the new major
- You can't transfer if you've already completed your degree
- Civil and construction site manager
