Elective courses
You can study an elective as part of many AUT qualifications. An elective can be taken from almost any subject area at AUT and counts towards your qualification, but not towards your major, minor or specialisation.
What you can study
Use the dropdown below to view electives from a specific study area, or see all your options. If your programme includes the option to study an elective, you could choose courses from any of the subjects listed below.
In some AUT programmes you can also choose between different courses within your programme. These will be listed on the web page for your chosen programme, and could also be called optional courses.

How to choose your electives
Keep the following in mind when thinking about electives:
- Subject(s) you’re interested in
- The level of the course – the first number in the course code shows the level of the course (for example, HIST500 is a level 5 history course)
- Prerequisites – level 5 courses generally don’t have prerequisites, but many level 6 and 7 courses do
Add an additional major or minor instead
Want to learn more about a particular subject? You may also be able to include an additional major or minor as part of the programme you’re studying at AUT.
How to enrol in your courses
Follow our step-by-step process to enrol in your courses and classes, and build your timetable for your next semester or year.
