Sanya Chachra

Regional Business Head, Hero Group, India
Postgraduate Diploma in Business

One of AUT's greatest strengths is its practical approach to education, says Sanya Chachra who came to AUT to study a Postgraduate Diploma in Business, specialising in international business.

“I chose this programme because I wanted to build a strong foundation in business while developing a global perspective. As an international student from India, I wanted an education that balanced academic excellence with practical industry exposure, and AUT stood out for exactly that reason. Studying in New Zealand also gave me the opportunity to experience a multicultural environment, collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds, and develop the confidence to work across cultures, writing research on developing countries and doing something that has become one of my greatest professional strengths.

“The programme included case studies, business simulations, research projects, presentations and collaborative assignments that reflected real workplace situations rather than purely theoretical concepts. Working on these projects strengthened my communication, analytical thinking, problem-solving and stakeholder management skills. It also taught me how to work effectively in multicultural teams and confidently present ideas to different audiences. These experiences made the transition into the professional world much smoother because I had already developed many of the skills employers value.”

The biggest highlight for her was how much she grew as a person.

“Perhaps my greatest achievement was the transformation that happened during my time at AUT, preparing me to confidently lead teams and make strategic business decisions in my career. Moving to another country pushed me outside my comfort zone and taught me resilience, independence and adaptability. I loved working on collaborative projects where students from different countries brought unique perspectives to solving business challenges. The supportive staff, engaging classroom discussions and emphasis on practical learning created an environment where I felt encouraged to question ideas, think creatively and continuously improve myself. Beyond academics, living in New Zealand gave me lifelong friendships, real market experience working part-time alongside studies, unforgettable experiences with Kiwis and friends from other countries, and a truly global outlook that continues to influence my career today.”

Shaping the future of education
Now working as the regional business head for India’s well-known Hero Group, Sanya loves being in a role where strategy meets people with meaningful social impact.

“I currently work with the Hero Group as the regional business head for its education business, where I lead regional growth, business strategy and operations. Our mission is to make quality higher education more accessible by connecting learners with accredited online degree programmes offered by leading universities across India. Every student who chooses to continue their education has the potential to transform not only their own future but also that of their family and community. Being able to contribute to that journey while leading talented teams, driving business growth and building scalable education solutions is incredibly rewarding.

“In my role, I oversee high-performing teams responsible for student counselling, admissions and business development while ensuring that prospective learners are guided towards programmes that align with their academic and career aspirations. Beyond enrolments, we’re equally committed to supporting students throughout their learning journey and enhancing their employability. The role has allowed me to develop as a leader by balancing commercial objectives with a learner-first approach. It has reinforced my belief that education is one of the most powerful catalysts for change, and I’m proud to be part of an organisation that is helping shape the future of higher education in India.”

She is proud of what she has already achieved in her career so far.

“For me, success isn't measured only by numbers. It's measured by the impact you create, the people you help grow and the positive culture you build around you. Over the years, I've led high-performing teams, contributed to business growth, driven strategic initiatives, and mentored individuals who have gone on to achieve success themselves and credit that to me. Knowing that my leadership has contributed to both organisational success and individual development is something I value deeply.”

Advice for other students
Sanya – who graduated from AUT at the end of 2016 – has some great advice for others who are thinking about their own university journey.

“Be curious, ask questions, volunteer for projects, network with people from different cultures, and embrace every opportunity that challenges your thinking. Experiences outside the classroom often become just as valuable as what you learn inside it. Most importantly, don't be afraid of making mistakes. Growth begins where your comfort zone ends.”

Don't study just to earn a qualification, study to build capabilities, she adds.

“Your first job won't define your career, but your willingness to keep learning will. Focus on building transferable skills like communication, leadership, problem-solving and adaptability. These qualities will continue to open doors throughout your career. Success doesn't happen overnight. Be patient, stay consistent, remain curious and always look for opportunities to create value rather than simply complete tasks. The world is changing rapidly, and the people who continue learning will always stay ahead.”
