Retail Operations Consultant, Lotto NZ
Bachelor of Business in International Business and Strategy with a minor in Management and Leadership
From guest lectures to networking opportunities with top business professionals, Disha Kapur had plenty of highlights while she was studying a Bachelor of Business.
“Studying at AUT was a highlight. It helped me develop a critical mindset and a deeper understanding of business concepts. The blend of group work and assessments improved both my academic and interpersonal skills. Guest lectures from professionals at KPMG and NZME provided real-world insights, and participating in the Shadow a Leader programme at KPMG was especially inspiring as it gave me a closer look at leadership and business operations. I also loved serving as secretary of the New Zealand Hindu Students Forum and performing at the AUT Worldwide event,
“But one of my greatest achievements at AUT was completing my workplace experience as a business development intern at ZINUS NZ. This role gave me hands-on experience in customer service, supply chain, marketing and e-commerce optimisation. It was my first real step into the professional world. I had the chance to work with an experienced and supportive team, and my manager, Alex Barker, played a key role in mentoring me; encouraging innovation and providing valuable career guidance.”
There was one staff member whose support she especially appreciated, says Disha who came to AUT as an international student from India.
“Taking a class with Dr Diana Lorenzo-Afable was an incredible experience. She designed engaging and insightful lessons that sparked my passion for social value creation. Her approach encouraged us to question theories rather than just memorise them, making the learning process much more dynamic. Through real-life case studies and interactive group presentations, the class helped me stay engaged while developing strong critical thinking skills.”
Building her professional skillset
Since completing her studies, Disha has loved working as a retail operations consultant for Lotto NZ.
“I'm passionate about learning new systems and continuously building my professional skillset, and I'm really enjoying my current role and responsibilities.”
It's a great environment to work in, she says.
“My workplace is flexible and supportive, with a team of amazing, skilled colleagues. New ideas and feedback are always welcomed, which makes me feel valued and included. The environment is friendly, collaborative and often filled with humour, creating a positive atmosphere even during busy days. The strong work-life balance also contributes to making each day at work fulfilling and enjoyable.”
Advice for other students
Disha, who graduated from AUT at the end of 2024 and is proud of being invited into the Beta Gamma Sigma honours society, has some great advice for other students.
“Focus on developing critical thinking and truly understanding concepts. Don’t hesitate to ask questions – engagement is key to effective learning. At the same time, maintain a healthy balance between your academic and social life, as both are essential for professional and personal growth.”
She also has some professional advice.
“Networking and strong communication skills can make a significant difference in opening the right doors. Every opportunity – no matter how small – can be valuable, so always stay open and proactive in seeking them out."
