Moving to New Zealand to pursue higher education was one of the biggest decisions of her life, says Reeja Raghunath who came to AUT as an international student from India.
“Looking back, my time at AUT was about much more than earning a degree. It was where I discovered my confidence and stepped outside my comfort zone. I wanted a university that would not only provide a quality education but also help me grow as a person. I chose AUT because of its practical learning approach, strong industry connections and the supportive environment it offers to international students.”
She thoroughly enjoyed her AUT journey.
“The Master of Business Management gave me the opportunity to develop my leadership, strategic thinking and problem-solving skills while preparing me for a global career. The programme was highly practical and encouraged us to apply what we learned to real business situations. Through research projects, presentations, group work and industry-focused assignments, I developed critical thinking, teamwork, communication and leadership skills.
“Outside of the classroom, networking events, career workshops and volunteering opportunities gave me the confidence to connect with professionals and better understand the New Zealand workplace. Those experiences prepared me for life after graduation just as much as my academic studies did. The support I received from the Employability and Careers team played a huge role in my journey. They encouraged me to believe in myself, improve my professional skills and make the most of every opportunity. I was also honoured to receive the Beyond AUT Overall Achievement Award, recognising my involvement in volunteering, leadership, networking, professional development and my contribution to the AUT community. AUT became a place where I didn't just study – I built the confidence to start my career in New Zealand.”
Building a professional career in New Zealand
After completing her studies in early 2026, Reeja now enjoys working at Auckland-based marketing agency Focus Marketing.
“As an international graduate, I'm proud to have started building my professional career in New Zealand, and I’m grateful that the networking opportunities I embraced during my time at AUT helped me secure my current role. I work in a supportive and encouraging environment where I continue learning every day. I enjoy communicating with customers, supporting my team, solving problems and contributing to the business. It's rewarding to see how the confidence, communication skills and professional relationships I developed at AUT have helped me transition into the workplace.
“Securing a role where I can apply what I've learnt while continuing to grow has been incredibly rewarding. Receiving positive feedback from both colleagues and customers has been especially meaningful because it reminds me that the skills, confidence and values I developed throughout my journey at AUT are making a positive impact in my workplace.”
AUT prepared her for much more than business, she says.
“My time at AUT taught me how to adapt to new situations, work with people from different cultures and build genuine professional relationships. One of the biggest lessons I learned was the importance of networking. I never imagined that the connections I made through AUT would help shape my career, but they did. Those experiences gave me the confidence to take opportunities that have brought me to where I am today.”
Advice for other students
Don't limit your university experience to lectures and assignments, Reeja advises other students.
“Make time for volunteering, networking events, workshops and student activities. Some of the most valuable lessons happen outside the classroom, and those experiences can shape both your personal and professional future. For example, I actively participated in several student clubs and communities while I was at AUT, including the AUT Malayali Club, which helped me build meaningful friendships and a strong sense of belonging. These experiences shaped me both personally and professionally and made my AUT journey truly unforgettable.”
She also has some great advice for those interested in a career in business management.
“Be open to opportunities, even if they seem outside your comfort zone. Build genuine relationships, stay curious and never stop learning. Every conversation, every event and every new experience has the potential to open a door. My own career began because I chose to connect with people, and that has made all the difference.”
