AUT completely transformed the course of her life, says Isha Narula who came to AUT as an international student from India to study an MBA.

“After working in the IT software industry, I wanted to move into management and believed a master’s degree in business would take my career in the right direction – and it did. I had always dreamt of studying abroad. While exploring universities, I discovered AUT in Auckland, and it felt like the right fit for my background and ambitions.

“My MBA taught me how to build meaningful connections and excel academically while balancing work commitments. Knowledge and opportunities were all around us, and the experience encouraged me to make the most of every chance to learn and grow. I specialised in international business and operations and management, and each subject helped me understand the reasons behind the processes I had encountered at work. Collaborative projects brought concepts to life and gave me the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with classmates of different ages and backgrounds. These experiences broadened my perspective and gave me knowledge and life lessons that continue to guide me both personally and professionally. While I was at AUT, I also had the opportunity to establish a cultural club, and one of my most treasured memories was celebrating Diwali with Ken Lee, Nikki Howes and other key members of the AUT community.”

A successful global career
Since graduating from AUT in 2013, Isha has built a successful global career and is now based in Toronto, Canada, where she works for Zurich Insurance.

“I’m elated to have built an international career that has taken me to multiple continents. Working for consulting companies like PwC and Deloitte has helped me build my confidence and character, and strengthened my work ethic. I enjoy solving complex problems and making decisions every minute while interacting with people around the world – including Canada, USA, Switzerland, India and Singapore. Respecting the time differences and cultural differences makes every day unique and challenging.”

She says her studies at AUT in New Zealand prepared her well for the career she has today.

“My studies helped me gain a sound understanding of cultural differences, business and operations, and how to build high-performing teams and the confidence to make decisions.”

Advice for other students
Isha has some great advice for other students.

“Your studies are important but displaying your knowledge and confidence will help you stand out. Build connections, and never be afraid to ask questions or to seek guidance. Don’t be afraid of anything or think that you’re being left behind, and never ever stop trying until you achieve what you believe in.”

She also has some guidance for those dreaming of a career similar to her own.

“To enter, you need a basic bachelor’s degree but the main thing you need is the determination to unlearn and learn, update your skills, build connections and grab opportunities as they come along. Over time, you’ll get to where you want to be.”
