Senior Procurement Specialist, Aion Cargo Solutions
Master of Supply Chain Management
The strategic and cross-functional nature of procurement in a fast-paced logistics environment is what she enjoys most about her role, says Neethu Cyriac who is now a senior procurement specialist at a leading logistics services provider in New Zealand.
“My role enables me to operate as a business partner, not just someone overseeing procurement operations. I work at the intersection of cost optimisation, risk mitigation, supplier relationship management and service continuity. Each decision has direct, measurable impacts on operations, customer experience and bottom-line performance. I truly value the collaborative nature of the work and regularly engage with internal stakeholders across sales, operations and finance to align procurement strategies with broader business goals.
“I particularly thrive on the problem-solving and continuous improvement aspects of the role, and have had the opportunity to lead procurement initiatives that directly improve supply chain efficiency and service reliability across international logistics networks. Whether it’s renegotiating contracts under changing market conditions, identifying alternative suppliers during disruptions or implementing digital tools to automate procurement processes, each challenge pushes me to think critically and act proactively.”
She is proud of securing a role in the New Zealand supply chain industry shortly after completing her Master of Supply Chain Management in 2024.
“As an international student transitioning into a new market, this was a significant milestone. It reflected not only my academic preparation but also my ability to quickly adapt, apply my global experience, and add value in a new business environment. I’m also proud of earning my MCIPS (Member of the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply) credential. Achieving this globally recognised qualification while applying those principles to my role in real-time has elevated my professional credibility and positioned me for long-term growth in the field.”
Relevant and supportive
Originally from India, Neethu came to AUT after more than a decade in a successful career in Dubai, hoping to enhance her practical supply chain management experience with a deeper understanding of global best practices in the field.
“The Master of Supply Chain Management at AUT stood out to me. The programme offered a balanced blend of academic rigour and practical relevance, with a strong emphasis on applied learning through case studies, industry projects and engagement with real business challenges. One of the major highlights was completing a six-month applied research project focused on improving supply chain efficiency for a real-world organisation. This experience allowed me to bridge the gap between theory and practice, and significantly boosted my confidence and strategic thinking.
“Another standout experience was participating in the Shadow a Leader programme. Sitting in boardrooms and watching high-level discussions unfold added a new dimension to my classroom learning. I was also honoured to represent and speak about my research project. Sharing my journey with incoming cohorts, especially fellow international students, was not only fulfilling but also reminded me of how much I had grown both personally and professionally.”
She says the support she received from AUT’s staff and services was instrumental to both her academic and professional growth.
“My research supervisor and course lecturers played a key role in sharpening my critical thinking and encouraging an evidence-based, strategic approach to solving complex supply chain problems. Their mentorship not only elevated my academic performance but also helped me apply theory to real-world business scenarios with confidence.
“AUT’s Student Hub also offered comprehensive, personalised support my transition to life in Auckland, managing academic responsibilities and accessing key student services. As a mature international student, I especially appreciated the warm, inclusive environment that made me feel part of the AUT community from day one. The Employability and Careers team was equally invaluable. They provided practical support in tailoring my CV for the New Zealand job market, preparing for interviews, and navigating job fairs and employer networking events.”
Advice for other students
Neethu – who is proud of receiving the top scholar award and being invited into the Beta Gamma Sigma honours society – has some great advice for other students.
“Approach your time at AUT as more than just earning a degree. It’s a launchpad for your personal and professional transformation. Say yes to opportunities outside the classroom – attend guest lectures, participate in leadership programmes, join clubs, become a student ambassador, volunteer at events, and seriously consider taking on applied research or consulting projects. These experiences build confidence, sharpen practical skills and help you grow into a well-rounded professional. If you fully engage with all that AUT has to offer, your experience can be truly life changing.”
Don’t hesitate to seek support, she adds.
“AUT offers a wealth of academic, wellness and career-related services that are there to help you succeed. Make sure you also build genuine connections with your lecturers, mentors and peers; they will form a key part of your professional support system long after graduation.”
