Client Account Manager (New Launches)
Master of Marketing with Distinction
Bachelor of Business in Marketing

Marketing has always appealed to her for its mix of creativity, strategy and data driven decision-making, says Sarah Dsouza who came to AUT as an international student from India.

“I moved to New Zealand in 2014 as a 15-year-old international student, and after completing high school I came to AUT to do a Bachelor of Business. After graduating with my bachelor’s degree, I worked for two and a half years as a marketing automation specialist in the tech industry. That experience showed me the power of client-focused, results-driven marketing and motivated me to return to AUT to complete my master’s degree to expand my strategic skills and approach challenges with more confidence.”

She says she chose AUT for its hands-on, practical approach to learning.

“The strong industry connections and real-world focus of the courses gave me confidence that I would graduate career-ready, with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. One of the biggest highlights was the practical learning environment, where we worked on real-world projects that mirrored industry challenges.

“I loved that the Master of Marketing included applied projects that reflected real business scenarios, allowing us to solve practical marketing challenges. There were also opportunities to engage with industry professionals and gain insight into current trends and expectations in the field. From these experiences, I developed confidence in applying marketing theory to real situations, strengthened my strategic thinking skills, and gained a better understanding of client-focused, results-driven marketing.”

Giving back
One of her proudest moments was when she was asked to be a teaching assistant during her master’s degree, says Sarah who now works as a client account manager (new launches) for a global software company.

“It was incredibly rewarding to give back to the university community, support students in their learning, and develop my leadership and mentoring skills. The role recognised my academic performance and communication skills, and it enabled me to grow professionally while supporting other students in their studies.”

She appreciated the support from the academic staff throughout her studies.

“The academic staff within the marketing department were incredibly supportive throughout my degree. Their industry experience and willingness to provide guidance helped me build confidence in my abilities and refine my strategic thinking. AUT’s practical, industry-focused learning environment and strong support network played a key role in helping me confidently transition into a working professional.”

Advice for other students
Sarah has some great advice for other students who are thinking about studying at AUT.

“Take full advantage of AUT’s practical learning opportunities. Get involved in applied projects, build relationships with lecturers and step outside your comfort zone. Back yourself and your abilities – confidence grows through action.”

She also has some tips for those interested in a marketing career.

“Build both creative and analytical skills and stay open to learning as the industry evolves. Most importantly, be authentic and believe in yourself unapologetically. Your unique perspective is your strength, so own it.”
