Sreehari Sambhu Nampoothiry

Master of IT Project Management student

Looking back, choosing to study at AUT was one of the best decisions he made, says Sreehari Sambhu Nampoothiry who came to AUT as an international student from India to study a Master of IT Project Management.

“After more than 24 years in project and transformation leadership roles across telecommunications and consulting, deciding to return to university was one of the biggest decisions of my career. While I had gained extensive professional experience, I wanted to deepen my knowledge, challenge my thinking and better understand many of the leadership and organisational questions I had encountered. When I decided to pursue a master's degree in project management, I researched leading universities across the world. AUT stood out because of its strong focus on industry relevance, research-informed teaching, student support and graduate employability. The programme has strengthened not only my technical and leadership skills but also my confidence, broadened my perspective and prepared me to build the next chapter of my career in New Zealand.”

Expecting to graduate from AUT later this year, he has had a number of highlights throughout his time at AUT.

“One of the greatest highlights of my AUT journey was the supportive learning environment. As an international student, I always found someone willing to answer questions, provide guidance and help me settle into university life in New Zealand. The programme combined academic learning with practical application through research-based learning and group assignments that encouraged collaboration and the sharing of diverse perspectives. I also appreciated the access to AUT's excellent library resources. The extensive collection of books, journals, online databases and research materials, together with the workshops and guidance provided by the library team, significantly strengthened my research capabilities.

“The Employability Lab was another highlight of my AUT experience. The employer presentations, career expos, CV workshops, LinkedIn coaching and one-to-one career appointments gave me practical insights into the New Zealand employment market. The workshops changed my perspective on career development by teaching me the importance of networking, volunteering, personal branding and understanding New Zealand's workplace culture. Completing the Beyond AUT Award encouraged me to actively apply these lessons beyond the classroom. Through networking, I became a volunteer with the Project Management Institute New Zealand (PMINZ), led its university outreach programme and later served as category lead for the technology projects judging panel at the PMINZ Project Awards 2026. These opportunities allowed me to contribute to the profession while building valuable relationships across New Zealand's project management community.”

Gaining much more than technical knowledge
When Sreehari came to AUT, he expected to strengthen his technical knowledge of project management. What he didn’t anticipate was how much AUT would prepare him to build a professional career in New Zealand.

“AUT taught me the importance of networking, volunteering, personal branding, effective communication and understanding New Zealand's workplace culture. These experiences gave me the confidence to engage with industry professionals, expand my professional network and become actively involved in the wider project management community. But perhaps the biggest lesson was that learning never stops. Even after more than two decades of professional experience, AUT reminded me of the value of staying curious, embracing new ideas, and continuously investing in personal and professional growth.”

There are several staff members whose support he particularly appreciated.

“I’m grateful to all my lecturers for sharing their knowledge, industry experience and passion for teaching. Their willingness to encourage critical thinking and independent learning made the programme both engaging and rewarding. I’d also like to thank the International Student Support team, the Employability and Careers team and the library staff for the guidance and support they provided throughout my studies. I’m especially grateful to Naufa Abdul Sattar for the encouragement, guidance and genuine willingness to support students throughout my AUT journey. That support made a meaningful difference to my overall experience at AUT.”

Advice for other students
Sreehari has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university journey.

“Make the most of every opportunity AUT offers, both inside and outside the classroom. Your degree is only one part of your university experience. Attend networking events, participate in employer sessions, volunteer, join student and professional organisations, complete programmes like the Beyond AUT Award, and build genuine relationships with people from different backgrounds. Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Every conversation, every event and every new experience contribute to your personal and professional growth.”

Remember that learning is a lifelong journey, he adds.

“Regardless of your age or previous experience, remain curious, ask questions, embrace challenges and continue investing in yourself. The knowledge, relationships and experiences you gain at AUT can open doors you never expected.”
