Euan Charles Bancroft

3rd-year student, Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Mechanical Engineering

He is enjoying the practical aspects of his studies, says Euan Charles Bancroft who is studying a Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Mechanical Engineering.

“I chose to study this programme because it allows for a more practical and industry-related examination of the wider engineering fundamentals. This has been great as it provides a good balance between the theoretical topics and understanding their practical applications for the industry.

“I’ve enjoyed the variety of course delivery and the dynamic lecturers. I particularly like it when in a lecture our lecturers use their extensive experience in the industry to aid with our understanding of new topics and ways of thinking. The lab sessions have also been especially enjoyable as we get to put theory into practice.”

Supported to thrive
Euan says he decided to come to AUT for his studies because he didn’t want to feel like a number in the system.

“I’ve appreciated that the university is student focused in both the course delivery and the available student support networks. This has enabled me to focus on my studies, while still knowing that I have a place in the AUT community. My dedication to attend lectures and work through the content provided and additional readings has resulted in grades I’m really proud of.”

The student support networks have been a highlight for him.

“The team at the AUT Student Hub has always been friendly, helped with my queries and put me in contact with other staff at AUT as needed. All of my lecturers across the courses, as well as their teaching assistants, are approachable and very helpful.”

Advice for other students
Now in the final year of his studies, Euan has some great advice for other students.

“My advice is to attend the lectures and take the time to do the coursework. You get out what you put in. Research and read further as learning also happens outside of the classroom – engineering is more than learning equations, it’s a way of seeing the world around us.”

He wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT’s engineering programmes to others.

“I’d definitely recommend AUT for anyone looking for a challenging but enjoyable learning experience. My goal is to become a mechanical design engineer after graduating, and maybe after gaining my own industry experience I’d like to become a lecturer myself to share my experience with the next generation of engineers.”
