2nd-year student, Bachelor of Arts in Māori Media & Creative Writing
Studying a Māori media degree provides an opportunity to see and explore a variety of works from the Pacific, says Astrid Whitside who is currently in the second year of their Bachelor of Arts in Māori Media & Creative Writing.
“For those who care about creativity in Aotearoa, this degree provides an excellent opportunity to see a little more of the iceberg that is the Māori media industry in New Zealand.
“I decided to come to AUT because the scope of classes provided in this course didn't seem to be offered anywhere else. I also like that the Māori media degree centres Māori kaiako to do what they do best.”
An enjoyable journey
Astrid has already had a number of highlights throughout their studies so far.
“The lecturers in many of my classes have made studying worthwhile and there's plenty of opportunities to get involved to varying degrees.”
While they still have another year of studying ahead, they have a pretty good idea how they see the future after graduating.
“I'm looking to get involved in creative, multimedia storytelling in as many capacities as possible.”
Advice for other students
Astrid has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their university journey.
“Make your own space, and always be eager to learn.
“My other piece of advice is to show up to your in-person classes.”
