Transcribing or dictating speech to text
This section of our Assistive Technology Guide explains how you can transcribe or dictate speech to text. Speech-to-text (STT) is the process of converting the spoken word into text.
It can be performed in real-time or using prerecorded audio files. You can dictate your voice or create a transcription of what another person has said. There are several reasons you may want to use STT, including:
- You find it easier to speak your sentences than to write them
- Using the computer's interface to type text is challenging for you
- In case you miss something in a meeting or class, you would like to convert audio recordings or live lectures to text
