The workplace experience was one of the most memorable aspects of her degree, says Thao Tran who came to AUT as an international student from Vietnam and completed a Bachelor of Business in Finance and Accounting in 2013.
“A valuable practical component of my degree was the compulsory workplace experience in my final year. This provided an opportunity to gain real-world experience in a corporate business environment before graduating and helped bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice.
“The experience gave me early exposure to workplace expectations, professional networks and day-to-day business operations. It also led to a full-time employment offer upon completion of the internship, providing a strong foundation for launching my career as a graduate in a large corporate organisation.”
Building a successful investment career
Since graduating from AUT, Thao has built a successful career in the investment industry and enjoys her role at the Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation Fund.
“I’m proud of the career I’ve built in the investment industry. Starting as an international student, I navigated the challenges of establishing myself in a new country and industry, and have since had the opportunity to work alongside highly talented professionals on investments with international scope and impact. The experience has allowed me to continuously learn, build a strong professional network, and develop both personally and professionally.
“My role at the Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation Fund gives me the opportunity to work on a diverse range of investments and contribute to meaningful long-term outcomes. The role combines analytical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, which keeps the work both challenging and rewarding. I particularly value the opportunity to continue learning, build expertise across different sectors and work alongside experienced professionals in a supportive and high-performing environment.”
She says her time at AUT prepared her well for the career she has today.
“One thing AUT prepared me for that I didn’t anticipate was the value of professional networking. Through the AUT Investment Club, I connected with industry professionals, attended events and gained insights into careers in finance and investment. These experiences helped me build confidence and establish valuable industry connections before starting my career.”
Advice for other students
Thao – who was AUT’s 2013 top graduate in finance and accounting, and the treasurer of AUT Investment Club – has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university journey.
“Try to gain practical experience as early as possible. Internships, industry projects and networking opportunities help you apply what you learn in the classroom, build professional connections and make the transition into a full-time career much easier.”
She also has some guidance for those interested in a business career.
“Networking is key to building a successful career, as many opportunities come through the relationships you develop over time. Equally important is having a genuine interest in your field, as curiosity and passion will help you stay motivated, continue learning and navigate the challenges that come with any career.”
