Netane Vaiaku

Technical Consultant, Tier1 Technical Ltd
Master of Computer and Information Sciences with Honours (Second Class, Second Division)

With a strong interest in cloud infrastructure and cybersecurity, Netane Vaiaku says postgraduate study in computing just made sense to him.

“I chose this degree because I wanted to deepen my expertise in cloud infrastructure and cybersecurity. I chose AUT because the Master of Computer and Information Sciences offered a great balance of advanced research and up-to-date practical industry-relevant skills that serve the demands of both domestic and international needs.

“My Master of Computer and Information Sciences research focused on IoT security and resilience modelling. Using methodologies like PRISMA and DSRM allowed me to design technical solutions that aren't just theoretical but ready for real-world smart infrastructure.”

Netane’s master’s degree research was supervised by Professor Jairo Gutierrez.

The hard work lands
Graduating in December 2025 was a massive highlight for him, says Netane who recently joined Tier1 Technical Ltd as a technical consultant.

“Seeing the pride in my family's eyes made all the hard work worth it. Completing my master’s degree with honours while maintaining my discipline and humility throughout the process is my greatest achievement. Another highlight was the sense of community in the Vā Pasifika student space at AUT – it was a place where I could lead, learn and stay connected to my culture.”

He considers himself fortunate to have the support of both the Vā Pasifika team and the academic staff in the School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences.

“Isabella Rasch and the Pacific student success team at Vā Pasifika provided a vital cultural and community anchor for me. Their support ensured that I felt empowered as a Pasifika student, fostering an environment where leadership and academic excellence went hand in hand. Academically, my research supervisor, Professor Jairo Gutierrez, was instrumental in my success. His mentorship during my master’s dissertation on IoT security and resilience modelling was invaluable. He challenged me to maintain a high standard of technical rigour, guiding me through the application of PRISMA and DSRM methodologies to ensure my research was both robust and industry-relevant. The combination of cultural support from Isabella and high-level academic guidance from Jairo was essential to my journey at AUT."

Advice for other students
Netane has some great advice for other students who are thinking about studying computing.

“Stay disciplined as much as possible. There will be long nights and sacrificed weekends, but the payoff is worth it. Focus on mastering the ‘why’ behind the technology, not just the ‘how’.”

He also has some wise words for those about to start their computing career.

“Mate ma‘a e ngaue, ‘oua ‘e mate he lea – let your work speak louder than your words. Be humble, keep learning and don't be afraid to start from the ground up to build your foundation.”
