He has always had a passion for technology, says Nasser Aldawish who came to AUT as an international student from Saudi Arabia to study computer and information sciences.

“I’ve always been fascinated by technology and its potential to transform our lives. I knew that pursuing a degree in computer and IT service science would enable me to follow my passion and gain in-depth knowledge of the subject, preparing me for an exciting career in the ever-evolving tech industry.”

Now working as a digital experience specialist for telecommunications giant stc in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, he has certainly achieved this goal.

I’ve also been part of the launch of a search engine in mystc app in 2023, and have been involved in revamping our company’s self-service kiosks to enhance the user experience.”

Remembering his time at AUT
Nasser still has fond memories of his time at AUT in New Zealand and says he had a number of highlights that made his academic journey memorable and rewarding.

“The interdisciplinary nature of my degree allowed me to explore a variety of subjects within computing and IT service sciences. I appreciated the engaging and challenging coursework, which pushed me to think critically and expand my knowledge. The practical, hands-on learning approach made the material more accessible and enjoyable.

“My professors and lecturers at AUT were knowledgeable, approachable, and dedicated to helping me succeed. They fostered a supportive learning environment and were always available for one-on-one consultations or group discussions, ensuring that I felt comfortable asking questions and seeking guidance. AUT's strong ties to the tech industry also provided me with unique opportunities to network with professionals and gain valuable insights into the job market.”

He also managed to make the most of student life while he was at AUT.

“One of the highlights of my time at AUT was the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of students from various backgrounds and cultures. This enriched my educational experience, broadened my perspectives, and helped me develop long-lasting friendships. I also enjoyed participating in extracurricular activities that catered to my interests, such as tech clubs and hackathons, and appreciated the opportunity to develop new skills and make new friends.”

Advice for other students
Nasser, who graduated from AUT in 2018, has some great advice for other international students thinking about studying at AUT.

“My advice is to participate in Orientation events to familiarise yourself with the campus, facilities, and resources available to you. This is also a great opportunity to meet fellow students and make new friends. Take advantage of your professors' expertise by asking questions, participating in class discussions, and attending office hours.

“Be proactive in your learning and stay up-to-date with the latest trends and innovations in your field. Attend guest lectures, conferences and industry events to connect with professionals in your field. Create a study schedule, prioritise tasks and set realistic goals to ensure you stay on top of your coursework. Don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it – AUT offers various support services, including academic assistance, career counselling and mental health resources.”

His other piece of advice is to get involved in extracurricular activities.

“Join clubs, societies, and participate in events that cater to your interests. AUT has a diverse student body, so take the opportunity to learn from your peers' unique perspectives and experiences. If possible, consider participating in a student exchange while you’re at AUT to experience a new educational environment and immerse yourself in a different culture.

“Finally, take advantage of the vibrant city life and natural beauty that Auckland has to offer. Explore the cultural scene, dine at diverse eateries, and participate in outdoor activities to make the most of your time in New Zealand.”
