Muhammad Waqas

Master of Professional Accounting student

AUT’s blend of academic quality and practical learning strongly appealed to him, says Muhammad Waqas who came to AUT as an international student from Pakistan to study a Master of Professional Accounting.

“I chose the Master of Professional Accounting to build on my ACCA and CIMA qualifications and more than 20 years of experience in senior accounting and finance roles. I wanted to study at a university where accounting concepts are connected to real business situations and students can engage with industry experts and alumni. Auckland’s multicultural environment also complemented my international background and offered valuable opportunities to build professional connections while studying. Working across Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and New Zealand has given me extensive experience with multicultural teams. The degree has strengthened my understanding of New Zealand’s tax and legal systems, enabling me to apply my international experience with greater confidence in the local business environment.”

He has particularly enjoyed the learning experience throughout the programme.

“The workshops and assignments challenged me to analyse realistic business scenarios, apply accounting knowledge and justify my decisions through research and evidence. These activities strengthened my critical thinking, practical understanding and confidence, while discussions with classmates from diverse backgrounds broadened my perspective on accounting and business issues. Practical case studies in workshops and assignments helped me translate technical knowledge into sound professional judgement. Working through realistic scenarios strengthened my understanding and increased my confidence in managing business situations in the workplace. Another highlight has been my AUT project examining climate disclosure quality and financial performance among listed agri-food companies in New Zealand and Australia.

“As an experienced finance professional, I’ve found the programme particularly valuable in strengthening my understanding of the New Zealand business environment and increasing my confidence in applying that knowledge professionally. Regular sessions with CPA Australia and CA ANZ, along with opportunities to meet industry experts and AUT alumni, were especially valuable. These experiences deepened my practical knowledge, clarified professional expectations and connected classroom learning with the wider business environment. My lecturers were consistently supportive throughout my studies. Their constructive feedback helped me work through technical concepts and develop a more disciplined approach to research, analysis and evidence-based communication.”

Gaining New Zealand experience
For Muhammad, coming to Auckland for his studies has proven to be the right decision.

“I’ve especially enjoyed Auckland’s multicultural environment and the opportunity to learn alongside people from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds. Studying and working in New Zealand has given me a deeper understanding of the local business environment. I’ve valued being able to continue developing academically while building my professional career here. I’m grateful for AUT’s Employability and Careers team, which supported me in securing my current role as group finance manager for Fuatavai Group Investments Trust (FGIT). AUT’s practical education and the local knowledge I gained strengthened my employer’s confidence in my capabilities and enabled me to apply my international experience in the New Zealand market.”

Expecting to graduate at the end of the year, he already has a good idea of how he sees his future.

“I’d like to continue advancing in senior finance leadership in New Zealand, building on my current role as group finance manager. I also hope to deepen my expertise in sustainability and climate-related reporting and contribute to responsible, well-informed business decisions.”

Advice for other students
Muhammad has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university journey.

“Take an active role in your learning by asking questions and using practical assignments to build confidence in applying your knowledge. Connect with industry experts and alumni, attend professional sessions and engage with AUT’s Employability and Careers team early.”

He also has some specific guidance for those who are returning to study after establishing their career.

“If you’re returning to education after years in the workforce, embrace the opportunity with confidence and remain open to new ideas. Your experience can enrich classroom discussions, while further study can sharpen your professional judgement and open up new career opportunities.”
