She is enjoying the practical aspects of the Master of Teaching and Learning, says Mahnoor Khan who came to AUT as an international student from Pakistan.
“I chose early childhood education because I enjoy working with children and supporting their learning, creativity and social skills. I wanted to develop professional knowledge and practical skills so I can become a thoughtful and effective teacher. AUT has a strong reputation for practical, career-focused education, and the Master of Teaching and Learning closely matches my career goal. I believe AUT can give me both academic knowledge and practical experience that I need.
“My programme includes practical learning through teaching practicum placements, applied projects, observations, reflections and planning learning experiences for children. During my teaching practicum, I had the opportunity to work directly with children and apply the theories and teaching strategies I learned in class. I also worked with my associate teacher and received feedback, which helped me improve my communication, observation, planning and teaching skills. These experiences have helped me understand the realities of working in an early childhood education centre, build my confidence and connect my academic learning with real-world teaching practice.”
The right environment
For Mahnoor, learning in such a diverse, welcoming and supportive environment has been a highlight.
“I’ve enjoyed meeting people from different cultural backgrounds and learning about New Zealand’s inclusive approach to education and early childhood care. Learning about the Te Whāriki and Māori perspectives has been great because it helped me understand the importance of relationships, culture, identity and belonging in early childhood education. My teaching practicum was another highlight for me because I could apply all my theoretical learnings and concepts in real situations there.”
She is also enjoying being based in Auckland for her studies in New Zealand.
“Auckland’s multicultural community and beautiful natural environment have also made my study experience enjoyable, and helped me feel more comfortable and connected to New Zealand.”
Advice for other students
Mahnoor has some great advice for other students who are thinking about studying education.
“My advice for other students would be to stay open-minded, participate actively in class and make the most of every practical opportunity. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek support from your lecturers when you need it. I’d also recommend getting involved in your practicums and building positive relationships with teachers and other students. Most importantly, manage your time well, stay consistent with your studies and enjoy the learning journey.”
She wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT to others.
“AUT provides a supportive and diverse learning environment, and the teaching is focused on both academic knowledge and practical experience. I particularly value the practicum opportunities, where I’ve been able to apply what I learned in class in a real early childhood education setting. I also appreciate the inclusive environment and the opportunity to learn about Māori perspectives and culturally responsive teaching. Overall, my experience at AUT has helped me grow personally and professionally.”
