Sona Patel

3rd-year student, Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching)

Education has the power to transform lives, says Sona Patel who is studying a Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching) and is looking forward to being a part of this transformative process.

“Growing up in South Auckland and having immigrant parents is a blessing that has uniquely equipped me for life. My upbringing has instilled a work ethic and a perspective in me to turn obstacles into stepping stones.

“As a teacher, I hope to inspire and bring to light different opportunities for the students that walk into my class; no matter what their cultures, identities or background. Being able to guide and help younger tamariki build on the foundations of their knowledge is a gift within itself.”

She is grateful for being awarded an AUT Find Your Greatness Scholarship to help her achieve her goal of becoming a teacher.

“AUT was one of the only universities that offered so much support, different kinds of clubs and provided two teaching practicums each semester for the three years of the degree. Through this scholarship I’ve been able to relieve the financial burden, which enables me to focus more on my studies and less on how to pay for them. This for me has led to better academic performance and a richer participation in campus life; with more opportunities to attend conferences and engage in social groups through university.”

Expanding her horizons
University has revealed a world of opportunities for her, Sona says.

“It taught me that it’s not just about acquiring knowledge; it's about growing as an individual. It all comes down to growing, learning and simply exploring things. Life at AUT enabled me to learn things and acquire abilities for life, not only in my chosen degree but in life in general. I’ve been able to  socialise with new people, upskill and participate in exciting extracurricular activities. Throughout my time here I’ve developed lifelong bonds, expanded my horizons and met inspiring mentors.”

She wouldn’t hesitate to recommend studying at AUT.

“AUT has created an environment, especially at the South Campus, where you can be yourself and explore such different aspects of life. It feels like home. There's a group or collective for almost every single person. The lecturers are great – they’re easy to talk to, provide the best stories, and give valuable and honest feedback. The Student Hub has also been a great guide by offering such a plethora of services and advice to aid you through university life, and the library has great resources and lovely people to help you.”

Advice for other students
Now in the final year of her studies, Sona has some great advice for other students.

“Your journey at university is as much about personal growth as it’s about academic achievement. Embrace the opportunities, face the challenges and, most importantly, enjoy the experience. Turn those obstacles into stepping stones!”

She also has some specific advice for anyone thinking about applying for a scholarship.

“Just apply for everything you qualify for. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
