Gustav Kahn

3rd-year student, Bachelor of Business in Management and Leadership with minors in Finance & Entrepreneurship and Innovation
He loves business and could spend hours discussing new ideas and solving problems, says Gustav Kahn, who came to AUT as an international student from Germany.
“I’d love to start my own business and use what I’ve learnt to solve a meaningful problem facing society. I’m particularly interested in leadership and find it fascinating how people respond to different leadership styles. Reflecting on my own experiences, I enjoy exploring which approaches have brought out the best in me and why. I chose AUT for my studies because I’d heard it offers a more hands-on, future-focused approach to learning, with strong connections to the business world.”
It's a decision he certainly hasn’t regretted.
“I’ve particularly enjoyed the practical, hands-on assignments, which have helped me develop skills and knowledge I can apply in the business world after graduation. AUT also offers plenty of opportunities to get involved. My personal highlight was participating in the Idea2Impact programme run by AUT Ventures, where I developed and refined a business idea. It gave me the chance to do what I enjoy most: turn ideas into practical business plans.”
Welcoming and supportive
For Gustav, the supportive environment at AUT has been one of the highlights.
“I’ve really appreciated how much support AUT offers its students, from access to doctors and counsellors to lecturers who are willing to help. When you get involved and ask for support, there are people ready to help you make the most of your studies and reach your potential. New Zealand has a welcoming culture, and I’ve found people to be kind and always willing to help, which has made settling in much easier. For me, New Zealand is also one of the most beautiful countries in the world.”
Throughout his studies, there have been a few achievements he is particularly proud of.
“I was grateful to receive an AUT International Scholarship – Faculty of Business, Economics and Law – Bachelor's degree for my first year, which helped make my studies more affordable. I’m also proud to have been recognised among the top 10 students in one of my finance courses and to have won the Ignite Award through AUT Ventures’ Idea2Impact programme.”
Highly recommended
Expecting to complete his studies in 2027, Gustav wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT to others.
“AUT is future-focused, preparing you for the workplace by connecting practical learning with current business trends. I’d definitely recommend studying here.”
He has some great advice for other students who are at the start of their own university journey.
“Find what you’re passionate about, show up to class and make the most of the opportunities around you. Go the extra mile – AUT is there to support you along the way. It’s incredibly rewarding to see your efforts pay off and grow as a person.”
