Nila Suparmi

Director of Human Resources, Kempinski Jakarta, Indonesia
Graduate Diploma in Business

It’s been almost a decade since Nila Suparmi came to AUT in Auckland as an international student from Indonesia, but she still has many fond memories of her time in New Zealand.

“I came to AUT because I wanted to learn more about human resources, and the Graduate Diploma in Business enabled me to pick up a few subjects related to human resources, studying at AUT’s City Campus located in the heart of the city. I loved studying alongside students from around the world while enjoying the opportunity to explore more of the city. I loved that I could simply wander around and discover the city on weekends.”

She also appreciated the emphasis on applied learning opportunities.

“I recall that we worked on many case studies, which helped me better understand the practical applications of what we were learning. We also had the opportunity to attend networking events with AUT alumni and industry leaders, which provided valuable insights and professional connections. The knowledge and skills I gained through my education played a significant role in my professional growth, and ultimately helped me win Best Senior HR Leader of the Year – South East Asia and Korea, Intercontinental Hotels Group.”

A truly global career
Since her days in Auckland, Nila’s human resources career has taken her around the world, working in leadership roles at the Hilton Bali Resort, the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, the Hilton Ras Al Khaimah Beach Resort in the United Arab Emirates, and Sunset Hospitality Group in Bali and Singapore. She has now returned to Indonesia, currently working as the director of human resources for Kempinski Jakarta.

“What I love most about my career is knowing that the work we do in HR positively impacts people's lives every day, which gives me a great sense of purpose and fulfilment.”

There is one particular lesson from her time at AUT she still draws on in her career today.

“One of the most valuable aspects of my AUT student experience was learning alongside people from all over the world. It taught me the importance of embracing diversity, respecting different perspectives and working effectively in an inclusive environment. These lessons have greatly influenced my approach as a human resources leader, where creating a workplace where everyone feels they belong, can be themselves and can thrive is one of my top priorities.”

Advice for other students
Nila has some great advice for other international students.

“Take a leap of faith and step outside your comfort zone to study and learn in a new environment. It may not always be easy, but it is an incredibly rewarding journey – one that will stay with you for the rest of your life. The experiences, friendships, and lessons you gain will shape not only your career but also your perspective on the world. For many, it will transform the way you see people, cultures, and the opportunities around you.”

She also has some guidance for those interested in a human resources career.

“Contrary to common perception, a career in human resources is incredibly rewarding. It’s a profession where you’re constantly learning, growing and being challenged every day. Most importantly, you have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people's lives every single day – whether by helping someone develop their career, creating an inclusive workplace or supporting others through important moments in their professional journey.”
