Wenyang Lyu

Machine Learning Engineer, Stayinfront
Master of Engineering with Honours (First Class)
He enjoyed the practical aspects of his studies, says Wenyang Lyu who completed a Master of Engineering and now loves leveraging AI models for practical solutions in his work as a machine learning engineer for Stayinfront.
“When I was looking at postgraduate engineering programmes in New Zealand, AUT stood out because it’s famous for its practical approach to teaching.
“I appreciated the practical components of the Master of Engineering, especially working on a Cloud Bay Clam classification and auto-sizing research project. Through this project I learned and then deployed end-to-end hands-on engineering solutions, and I still use the image processing, machine learning and project management skills I gained from this project in my career now.”
Finding fulfilment in research
For Wenyang – who came to AUT as an international student from China, and is proud of completing the Beyond AUT Award and receiving a top graduand award – the defining highlight of his academic journey was the opportunity to present his research to his peers and lecturers.
“This captured an essence that I’ve carried with me long after graduation: the fulfilment found in diving deep into a subject of interest and then sharing those insights with the community. I find my greatest fulfilment in that cycle – moving from immersive discovery to a meaningful, open exchange with the community."
He says he appreciated the support from AUT staff throughout his research journey, and there is one lecturer who had a particular impact on him.
“I’m especially grateful to Associate Professor David Wilson, who was my supervisor for my master’s degree research on classifying and sizing marine clams using imaging and machine learning techniques.”
Advice for other students
Having graduated from AUT at the end of 2024, Wenyang has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own studies.
“My advice for other students considering postgraduate study is to enjoy your studies and be proactive.”
He also has some guidance for those who want a career in engineering.
“If you want an engineering career, make sure you work on some end-to-end solutions and get your hands dirty while you’re studying.”
