Aung Zaw Lin

Programme Manager, Catholic Relief Services, Myanmar
Master of Disaster Risk Management and Development with Honours (First Class)

His decision to study the Master of Disaster Risk Management and Development was deeply rooted in his background, says Aung Zaw Lin, who came to AUT as an international student from Myanmar, supported by a Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship.

“Coming from one of the world's most disaster-affected regions, I’ve witnessed firsthand how annual monsoon floods and other hazards devastate local communities, assets and lives. Driven by a desire to make a difference in my country, I chose to pursue my education at AUT. AUT is widely recognised as the best institution for international students in New Zealand, offering incredible student support and a campus environment that truly nurtures both learning and personal wellbeing."

The research component of the degree was a highlight for him.

“My research adopted a qualitative methodology to explore local community perspectives on the Waiatarua Reserve, the largest urban wetland restoration project in Auckland. I was deeply privileged and honoured to invite the local communities within the Ōrākei Local Board area of Auckland to participate in this study. They’re local residents who demonstrate immense commitment and dedication to preserving this vital ecosystem, while ensuring the council maximises the ecological services for both our built environment and society.

“Completing my research in my final semester was heavily supported by the excellent dedicated postgraduate research space at AUT – it truly enhanced my learning experience. Navigating the ethical approval process for my research was an incredibly valuable experience for me. Although it was a rigorous and detailed journey, it taught me the importance of meticulous planning and allowed me to collaborate closely with my supervisors and faculty.”

Empowering communities
After graduating from AUT in 2025, Aung Zaw is now back in Myanmar, where he works as a programme manager for international humanitarian and development agency Catholic Relief Services.

“I enjoy working with local communities. They’re the first to be affected and to respond whenever a disaster happens. Our work builds long-term community resilience. Working with communities and local partners to build locally-led resilience is the most meaningful and rewarding endeavour for me.”

He says his studies have given him a strong foundation for his work now.

“AUT enabled me to access the latest trends, policies, research and frameworks in disaster risk management, equipping me with the academic knowledge and international best practices needed to foster community resilience. I’m incredibly grateful to be in a position today where I can directly apply everything I learned during my time at the university."

Advice for other students
Aung Zaw, who completed a Beyond AUT Award alongside his studies, has some great advice for other students.

“To maximise your learning experience, fully leverage the resources and facilities available throughout your learning journey. Make consistent use of Te Mātāpuna Library and Learning Services to strengthen your academic foundation. If you encounter any challenges – whether it’s related to accommodation, financial pressure or health and wellbeing – reach out to the Student Hub for dedicated support. Finally, engage early with the Employability and Careers team to build your professional networks and develop the leadership skills for your next step after graduation.”

He also has some guidance for those interested in a career in the development and humanitarian sector.

“In the development and humanitarian sectors, earning a qualification from an internationally recognised university is a strategic move. It aligns perfectly with long-term career aims for top-level executive leadership roles, supporting you in reaching higher goals, driving professional growth, and unlocking better prospects to steer organisational strategy and impact at senior levels.”
