In this address, Professor Winchester will share his experiences with using quantitative analysis to assist decision making. He will show how a model used to predict the outcome of rugby games resulted in a revision to bonus point rules used for Super Rugby and The Rugby Championship.
Professor Winchester will then discuss how economic theory and data can be used to evaluate trade and climate policies, and assist the negotiation of multinational treaties. He will close with a discussion of the Climate PoLicy ANlysis (C-PLAN) model, an open-source tool that will be used to evaluate policies to meet New Zealand’s climate goals.
Professor Winchester is passionate about using quantitative analysis to make the world a better place. His core research assesses climate and trade policies using numerical economy-wide models. He also has an interest in sports economics and sports ranking systems. Professor Winchester has published extensively in major peer-reviewed journals and provided policy advice to governments in several countries.
Professor Winchester is Co-Editor of the Journal of Global Economic Analysis and, prior to joining AUT, was a Principal Research Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He holds a PhD from the University of Nottingham, a Master degree from The Australian National University, and a Bachelor degree from the University of Otago.
