Certificate of Proficiency - Personal Training course

Our community needs qualified personal trainers and fitness instructors who can make a positive difference. These leaders inspire, motivate and encourage others by providing them with the opportunity to enjoy exercise, fitness and a healthy way of living. AUT's Certificate of Proficiency in Personal Training qualifies you to work as a personal trainer and fitness instructor.

Personal training course overview

This personal training course provides you with the knowledge and skills to assist clients in reaching their personal health and fitness goals. You will also learn vital business skills to help you succeed in a career either as a gym or studio-based contracted trainer, employee trainer or as an independent personal trainer.

The Certificate of Proficiency in Personal Training focuses on weight training in a gym environment therefore, we highly recommend that you are an active gym member so you can put into practice what you are learning.

You are given access to the AUT Sport and Fitness Centres during your enrolment in each short course (from the start date to the assessment date). This will help you turn your theory into practical learning.

  • Business skills for personal training
  • Exercise prescription for fat loss
  • Flexibility (advanced)
  • Lifespan development and medical conditions
  • Nutrition for PTs
  • Periodisation
  • Programming for the overweight and deconditioned
  • Soft tissue injury
  • Weight training techniques (intermediate)

Delivery mode

This programme is delivered part-time on the weekends, online and at the AUT North Campus. By successfully completing the three courses for the Short Course in Personal Training, you could be qualified within four months.

After completing this personal training course

AUT's Certificate of Proficiency in Personal Training qualifies you to work as a personal trainer and fitness instructor. Many of our students who complete the Certificate of Proficiency in Personal Training are highly sought after for their expert knowledge and skills, with many finding employment within the fitness industry in numerous gyms, recreation and community centres throughout New Zealand and overseas.
