Master of Teaching and Learning/ Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (Primary): application and compliance process

Thank you for your application to the Master/Postgraduate Diploma of Teaching and Learning (Primary). This page explains what happens next and the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand requirements you need to meet before you can start studying your programme.

Complete your part of the process as soon as you can - some of the compliance checks below take time and can cause delays.

Successfully complete the compliance process before you can start your studies

This form must be completed by the applicant and not an agent or representative, as it contains personal background information which will only be known by the applicant.

You should set aside a minimum of 30 minutes to complete this form. Please note it is not possible to partially complete sections of this form and return to it later.

Initial Teacher Education Programme Entry Form

You need to successfully complete literacy and numeracy assessments.

These are important because all teachers must have literacy and numeracy competency.

The assessments must be completed by you as the applicant, and not an agent or representative.

Literacy competency

Literacy assessment This link will take you straight to the assessment and the timer will start as soon as you click on the link. You will have 60 minutes to complete and submit the assessment. Your submission will be marked by our staff and the application will progress if you achieve a passing score.

Numeracy competency

The Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand requires all students enrolling in primary Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes to demonstrate competence in mathematics under an approved assessment.

International applicants

For your application to enter our programme you will need to successfully complete the AUT Numeracy assessment. Once you have entered the programme you will need successfully complete the Teaching Council approved assessment.

AUT Numeracy assessment This link will take you straight to the AUT Numeracy assessment and the timer will start as soon as you click on the link. You will have 60 minutes to complete and submit the assessment. Your submission will be marked, and the application will progress if you achieve a passing score.

Domestic applicants

Under the Teaching Council requirement, you must pass the Teaching Council approved assessment to progress your application. We will arrange a date/time for you to access and complete the assessment (instructions will be sent by email).

What happens next

Once you successfully complete the literacy and numeracy assessments (and have submitted the ITE programme entry form), you will be invited to attend an interview with AUT staff at our North Campus or online if you're located outside Auckland.

We will provide more information about what to expect at the interview once your application reaches this stage.

You need to provide names and email addresses of three referees.

Who can be a referee

Your referees should:

  • Have known you for 12 months or more
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Not be your spouse, extended family member or close friend
  • Not live at the same address as you do

Once you've asked their permission and provided their details on the compliance form, we will email them an online form to complete.

Getting hold of referees can take time, so it's important to start this process early. If we haven't received a reply from your referees, we may ask you to help us follow this up or provide us with alternate contacts.

You need to give permission to be vetted by the New Zealand Police. The compliance form above includes a section for you to fill in your details and provide consent for a police check.

The School of Education will submit the police vetting information to the New Zealand Police for you when we have received your completed compliance form and have sighted two approved forms of ID that confirm your identity.

If you have lived outside New Zealand, you need to provide a police clearance from any country you've lived in since turning 18, if you lived there for more than 12 months in the last 10 years.

Getting a police clearance from another country takes time. It's important to start this process early.

Let us know if you have trouble obtaining the required police clearance.

The Children's Act 2014 requires that all people who work or are likely to work with children must be safety checked.

Information collected from the Initial Teacher Education Programme Entry Form, interview, references and police vetting will be used to assess the risk you would pose to the safety of children.

Once you successfully complete the literacy & numeracy assessments (and have submitted the ITE programme entry form), you will be invited to attend an interview with AUT staff at our North campus or online for those located outside of Auckland.

We will provide more information about what to expect at the interview once your application reaches this stage.

What you need to bring to the interview

To submit the New Zealand Police vetting request, we must confirm your identity by sighting two forms of ID; one primary and one secondary, one of which must be photographic.

Even if you've already supplied this to AUT as part of your application, we still need to sight the documents in your presence as part of the NZ Police vetting process.

Primary IDs include:

  • Passport (NZ or overseas)
  • NZ full birth certificate (issued on or after 1 January 1998)
  • NZ Citizenship Certificate
  • NZ Certificate of Identity
  • NZ Firearms Licence
  • NZ Emergency Travel Document
  • NZ Refugee Travel Document

Secondary IDs include:

  • NZ Driver Licence
  • Kiwi access card
  • NZ full birth certificate (issued before 1998)
  • Community Services Card
  • NZ Student Photo Identification Card
  • NZ Employee Photo Identification Card
  • Inland Revenue number confirmation letter
  • NZ issued utility bill (issued no more than six months ago)
  • NZ Electoral Roll Record
  • International Driving Permit

Current identity documents are preferred, but documents that have expired within the past five years may be accepted.

Evidence of a name change

If the two identity documents have different names (eg a birth certificate contains your maiden name and a driver licence contains your married name) please provide evidence of a name change, such as a marriage certificate or statutory declaration.
