Successfully complete the compliance process before you can start your studies

To study the Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching, you need to show you meet the English language competency requirements as set out by the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand before we can offer you a place in the programme.

You may need to sit an English language test to show you meet these requirements.

English language competency requirements for AUT’s initial teacher education programmes.

This form must be completed by the applicant and not an agent or representative, as it contains personal background information which will only be known by the applicant.

You should set aside a minimum of 30 minutes to complete this form. Please note it is not possible to partially complete sections of this form and return to it later.

Initial Teacher Education Programme Entry Form

You need to give us the names of two referees through the Initial Teacher Education Programme Entry Form.

Who can be a referee

Your two referees should:

  • Have known you for 12 months or more
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Not be your spouse, extended family member or close friend
  • Not live at the same address as you do

Once you've asked their permission and provided their details on the entry form, we will email them an online form to complete.

Getting hold of referees can take time, so it's important to start this process early.

You need to give permission to be vetted by the New Zealand Police through the Initial Teacher Education Programme Entry Form.

The School of Education will submit the police vetting request to the New Zealand Police for you when we’ve received your completed entry form and sighted two approved forms of identification documents that confirmed your identity.

You will be asked to bring in the identification documents to your interview.

If you've lived outside of New Zealand for 12 months or more in the last 10 years, you need to provide a police clearance for the country or countries you've lived in. The 12 months do not have to be consecutive. For example, you may have spent two months in the country each year for six years.

Don’t include any time overseas while you were under the age of 16.

Getting a police clearance from another country takes time. It’s important to start this process early.

To ensure that you have the literacy and numeracy competency standard appropriate for teaching at secondary schools, you need to complete an online literacy and numeracy competency assessment as part of the selection process.

About the assessment

  • The timer will start as soon as you click on the link and you have 60 minutes to complete and submit the assessment.
  • This assessment must be completed by you as the applicant (without the use of AI), and not an agent or representative.

Literacy & Numeracy competency assessment

Applicants will proceed to an interview if they successfully meet the required literacy and numeracy competency.

The interview process involves a panel asking a series of questions designed to assess your disposition to teach and explore your views on a range of areas including:

  • Teaching and learning
  • Working with young people
  • Knowledge of the secondary sector
  • Working with diverse students
  • Your knowledge of biculturalism and Te Tiriti o Waitangi – Treaty of Waitangi
  • New Zealand as a multicultural society

The Children's Act 2014 requires that all people who work or are likely to work with children must be safety checked.

Information collected from the Initial Teacher Education Programme Entry Form, interview, references and police vetting will be used to assess the risk you would pose to the safety of children.
