Student loans and allowances

If you’re a domestic student, you may qualify for a student loan or allowance to help pay for course-related costs or living expenses while you’re studying.

Student loans and allowances are offered by StudyLink, and they assess your eligibility. To find out if you’re eligible, head to their website and take the eligibility test.

How to apply for a student loan or allowance

You can view a step-by-step guide to the student loan and allowance application process on the StudyLink website.

What to expect when paying with a student loan

Processing times

  • Standard processing times: your student loan application usually takes about four weeks to be approved and paid
  • Peak times: if you’re applying during the busy period (mid-December to March), your application could take more than four weeks due to high demand

If your student loan application is taking longer than expected or you haven't heard anything from StudyLink, contact StudyLink

What happens once your student loan has been approved

  • StudyLink will send a verification of study request to AUT to confirm your study details from your application
  • AUT will confirm your study details with StudyLink the next working day to allow payment of fees to proceed
  • Your fees will be paid directly to AUT from StudyLink
  • If you've made changes to your enrolment during your study, AUT will provide updated information to StudyLink on the same day

What you need to do if you're paying with a student loan
