Zee Zakiya

Cyber Security Lead, Fertility Associates
Master of Computer and Information Sciences with Honours (First Class)

After building a successful career in IT, Zee Zakiya chose AUT to further her professional development through a Master of Computer and Information Sciences. She was drawn to AUT's practical, industry-focused approach and its commitment to delivering contemporary, future-focused learning.

“Technology evolves rapidly, and I wanted to ensure my skills remained current while gaining a deeper understanding of emerging technologies and industry best practices. AUT’s Master of Computer and Information Sciences offered advanced, up-to-date courses that reflected the fast-changing technology landscape, giving me the opportunity to build on my existing experience while preparing for the future of the IT industry.

“I loved that the programme included practical projects that focused on solving real-world technology problems, allowing me to apply what I learned in a hands-on environment rather than simply studying theory. These experiences strengthened my technical skills, analytical thinking, communication, and problem-solving abilities. They also helped me understand how technology is applied in industry, and prepared me for working with stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams. Another highlight was studying alongside professionals who were already working in the IT industry. Everyone brought different experiences and perspectives to class discussions, making the learning environment both engaging and practical.”

She says completing a master’s degree while maintaining a full-time job was both challenging and rewarding.

“This experience taught me resilience, time management and discipline. Looking back, completing my master’s degree with first-class honours is one of the achievements I'm most proud of, and it gave me the confidence to take on bigger challenges in my career. As I completed my master’s degree while working full-time, I also appreciated how well the assessments were structured and spaced throughout the semester. This made it possible to balance my studies with my career without compromising either. The lecturers were incredibly supportive, approachable and always willing to help, creating a positive learning experience.”

Helping shape a safer digital future
After graduating from AUT in 2025, Zee now enjoys her role as a cyber security lead for Fertility Associates.

“I enjoy knowing that the work I do helps protect highly sensitive patient information and supports healthcare services that make a real difference in people's lives. No two days are the same. My role involves developing cybersecurity strategy, implementing new technologies, strengthening governance, leading security initiatives, and helping staff build cyber awareness. I enjoy solving complex challenges while working alongside people across the organisation to create a stronger security culture. I'm proud of becoming a cyber security lead early in my career, and having the opportunity to lead initiatives that strengthen cybersecurity within a healthcare organisation.”

Beyond her day-to-day role, she is passionate about contributing to the wider technology community and helping influence the future of cybersecurity in Aotearoa New Zealand.

“I hope to inspire more people to pursue careers in technology and help shape a safer digital future. I’m a volunteer committee member for New Zealand's participation in the development of international AI standards through the New Zealand Mirror Committee, shaping the future of AI governance and standards at both a national and international level. I’m also working with Standards New Zealand for the adoption of other standards within cybersecurity, AI, privacy and IT governance. I'm incredibly proud to have been recognised as one of only two finalists in the 2026 CIO Awards New Zealand Emerging ICT Leader category. This recognition reflects not only my technical expertise, but also my leadership, commitment to continuous learning and passion for making a positive impact in the cybersecurity profession.”

Advice for other students
Zee has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university journey.

“Take every opportunity that comes your way and don't be afraid to challenge yourself. Ask questions, stay curious and remember that learning doesn't stop when you leave the classroom. The effort you put in today will create opportunities you never imagined.”

Commit to being a lifelong learner, she adds.

“Technology changes constantly. Build strong technical foundations, but don't underestimate the importance of communication, leadership and relationship-building. These skills will help you stand out just as much as your technical expertise. Most importantly, believe in yourself even if you don't have all the answers yet. Every expert started somewhere.”
