Charles Wesley Rotoava

2nd-year student, Bachelor of Construction in Construction Management
He chose to study construction management to develop the skills to manage construction projects effectively, says Charles Wesley Rotoava who came to AUT as an international student from the Solomon Islands, supported by a Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship.
“In my home country, the Solomon Islands, some buildings don’t fully comply with building codes and standards, which can affect the health, safety and wellbeing of occupants and workers. For example, poor air ventilation systems can result in unhealthy indoor air quality, while the use of low-quality materials containing harmful chemicals may pose health risks to building users and construction workers. In addition, the Solomon Islands lack professionals with construction management skills. By studying this degree, I hope to gain the knowledge and expertise needed to help improve construction practices and contribute to the development of safer, healthier and more sustainable building practices in the Solomon Islands.”
Charles says he chose AUT for his studies because of the university’s reputation for providing practical, industry-focused education that prepares students for their future careers.
“AUT offers modern facilities, experienced lecturers and opportunities to gain hands-on experience, which are all important for developing my skills in construction management. I’ve particularly enjoyed studying project management, construction technology, health and safety, and construction law because these topics have helped me understand how different parts of a construction project work together. I’ve also enjoyed working on group projects and assignments, as they’ve improved my communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills.
“My programme includes a range of practical learning activities, including applied projects, group assignments, case studies, site-related exercises and industry engagement opportunities. These activities allow students to apply the knowledge learned in class to real-world construction scenarios. We also have opportunities to interact with industry professionals through guest lectures, networking events, and career workshops organised by AUT. These networking events have also given me a better understanding of the construction industry and the career opportunities available after graduation. In addition, AUT's Employability and Careers Lab has helped me with CV writing, interview preparation, and career planning. These experiences have increased my confidence and prepared me for future employment in the construction industry.”
Going beyond studying
Charles admits he didn’t expect the many opportunities to develop his skills beyond his studies.
“Through the group projects, presentations, networking events and leadership opportunities I’ve had at AUT, I’ve become more confident in communicating and working with people from different cultures and backgrounds. I was honoured to be invited into the Amokura Vice-Chancellor’s Leadership Programme, which helped me develop leadership, teamwork and personal development skills. Through this programme, I had the opportunity to connect with other student leaders, learn from experienced mentors, and gain a deeper understanding of leadership in a diverse community. This was an experience I didn’t expect when I first came to AUT, and it has helped me grow both personally and professionally.
“I was also surprised by the amount of support available to students. AUT provides health services, counselling, therapy, academic support and career guidance, which have helped me manage both my studies and personal wellbeing. The Employability and Careers team also helped me improve my CV and prepare for future job opportunities. Overall, AUT has provided opportunities that go beyond academic learning and has helped me become a more confident, capable and well-rounded individual.”
There are a few AUT teams who had a particular impact on him.
“The health and wellbeing services, including the counselling and mental health support, have provided support when needed and helped me maintain a healthy balance between my studies and personal life. I’ve also received support from my lecturers and teaching assistants, who have been approachable and willing to help with academic questions and course-related challenges. In addition, Hans Tommy and the Amokura team provided valuable leadership development opportunities and helped me build confidence, communication and teamwork skills. These services and people have played an important role in supporting my success at AUT.”
Advice for other students
Charles has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university journey.
“My advice to other students is to stay organised, manage your time well and start assignments early. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it – AUT provides many support services, including academic support, health services and career guidance. I’d also encourage students to get involved in activities outside the classroom, including leadership programmes, networking events and student clubs. These opportunities help build your confidence, communication skills and professional connections. Most importantly, stay focused on your goals, work hard and make the most of the opportunities available to you during your time at AUT.”
He wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT to others.
“AUT is a great university because it not only provides quality education but also supports students' wellbeing, career development and personal growth, helping them succeed during their studies and in their future careers. It provides practical, industry-focused education and prepares students for real-world careers. The lecturers are supportive, and there are many opportunities to develop professional skills through projects and industry engagement. AUT also offers excellent student support, and programmes like the Amokura Vice-Chancellor’s Leadership Programme help students build leadership and communication skills.”
