Tracy Joanne B. Goonetilleke

2nd-year student, Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences in Networks and Cybersecurity with minors in Artificial Intelligence and Software Development
She chose to study computing because she loved tinkering with device hardware when she was growing up, says Tracy Joanne B. Goonetilleke, who came to AUT as an international student from the Philippines.
“My father often included me in his projects, so I grew a fondness for opening up and repairing all sorts of devices at home. I started playing online games in the pandemic, so with my love for both games (software) and hardware, I chose computer science. I chose AUT because people on numerous forums recommended it as a great uni for my degree. In my last year of high school, I came to the AUT City Campus and immediately fell in love with AUT.”
Expecting to graduate in 2027, she already has a good idea of how she sees her future.
“When I graduate from AUT, I’d love to be a cloud software engineer.”
Opportunities beyond the classroom
There have been many highlights throughout Tracy’s studies so far.
“My programme includes networking events and practical projects. From these, I’ve been able to practise what I’ve learnt and go beyond the theory. I’ve also had the opportunity to work in teams, which is similar to working in the industry. Networking events led me to likeminded people and companies with internship opportunities. I enjoy learning about so many new things and gaining answers to my questions about my field. I’ve also enjoyed meeting likeminded people in my degree. It motivates me to do well when I have peers who enjoy the programme just as much as I do.”
Outside of classes, she has appreciated being offered a number of leadership opportunities at AUT.
“AUT has given me multiple leadership opportunities. I came to uni expecting that I’d focus purely on my studies. However, through the Amokura Vice-Chancellor’s Leadership Programme and being an AUT ambassador, I’ve been given the chance to hone my leadership skills and expand my growth. I’m particularly proud of maintaining a decent GPA, being nominated for Amokura, and the opportunity to be an AUT student ambassador.”
Highly recommended
Tracy wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT to other students.
“I’d highly recommend AUT to others because AUT provides opportunities beyond learning within your degree. I’ve had volunteering opportunities and outreach opportunities as well, which I believe have helped make me a well-rounded individual. I believe AUT provides students with a sound work-life balance.”
She has some great advice for other students.
“My advice is to never let any opportunity slip. Take the chance when you can, and trust that you can do anything you set your mind to.”
