Priyanka Chaudhary

2nd-year student, Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Software Engineering

She chose to study software engineering because she’s always been interested in technology and how software can solve real-world problems, says Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) student Priyanka Chaudhary.

“I enjoy learning how systems work, building projects, and developing practical solutions through coding and problem-solving. I’m especially interested in how technology and AI are shaping the future, and I want to build the skills needed to contribute to that space and create meaningful impact through technology.

“My goal is to work in the medical technology space, where I can help develop software and innovative solutions that improve healthcare systems, patient experiences or access to medical support. I’m really passionate about combining technology with helping others, whether that is through improving healthcare systems, increasing accessibility or creating tools that can support people in their everyday lives. For me, success is not only about having a career in technology, but also about creating solutions that positively impact the community.”

But she isn’t waiting until graduation to use her software skills to help others – even while studying, she has already started to look for ways to help others through technology.

“Alongside my studies, I’ve created a website called UniHelpNZ, which I programmed myself to support students who may feel overwhelmed or unsure about navigating university life. Starting university can be stressful and confusing, and I wanted to create something that could make students feel more supported and less alone in that experience. Building UniHelpNZ also helped me strengthen my programming skills and showed me how technology can be used to solve real problems within the community.”

Practical and future-focused
What she has enjoyed most about her studies is the combination of problem-solving, teamwork and applying technical knowledge to real-world situations, Priyanka says.

“I’ve particularly enjoyed learning programming and working on projects where I can build practical solutions, as it has helped me develop both my technical and creative thinking skills. AUT encourages students to put themselves out there, connect with industry, and gain practical experience early on. I also had the opportunity to work with The Fractional Directory as part of my workplace experience, which was an incredibly valuable experience for me as a first-year student. Opportunities like this have helped me grow professionally and personally, and they have motivated me even more to pursue a future where I can combine technology, innovation and helping people.

“Another reason I would recommend AUT is because of how modern and future-focused the learning is. In Software Engineering, we’re constantly learning skills that are relevant to current industries and technologies, which makes me feel prepared for future opportunities. I also appreciate that AUT values innovation and creativity, rather than only focusing on traditional learning methods.”

She didn’t expect how supportive and approachable the lecturers and other AUT staff would be, she admits.

“Being able to directly connect with staff, ask questions and receive guidance has made a huge difference in my experience. One person who stood out to me is Frances Cross from AUT Ventures. I had a really meaningful conversation with her about my interests, goals and the projects I’ve been working on, and she was incredibly encouraging. She took the time to listen, gave helpful advice and was genuinely kind in helping me navigate opportunities and next steps. Martin Stommel is another great staff member – he helped me figure out my workplace experience requirements and gave me great guidance on how I can do internships while at AUT. Having support from staff like Frances and Martin showed me that there are people here who truly care about students and want to help them grow.”

Advice for other students
Now in the second year of her studies and proud of the strong A average she has maintained throughout her degree so far, Priyanka has some great advice for other students.

“The advice I’d give other students is to take university one day at a time. It can feel overwhelming at first, especially when everyone around you seems to know exactly what they want to do in the future. I’ve learnt that you don’t need to have everything figured out straight away, and it’s completely okay to still be exploring your interests and goals while you study.

“I also think it is important to focus on learning, building your skills and making the most of opportunities rather than comparing yourself to others. Everyone’s journey is different, and careers are often non-linear. Sometimes the experiences, people, or opportunities you least expect can completely shape your direction in the future.”

University isn’t only about grades, she reminds others.

“Your time at university is also about growing as a person, meeting new people, building confidence and discovering what you enjoy. Try to stay open to new experiences, put yourself out there and trust that growth happens over time. Most importantly, enjoy the process and be proud of the progress you make along the way, even if you’re still figuring things out.”
