Tia Kimitaunga

2nd-year student, Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology
Diploma in Arts
Deciding to study criminology and criminal justice was easy for Tia Kimitaunga who started her studies with a Diploma in Arts, before moving into the second year of the Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology.
“I’ve long been fascinated by why some people commit crime. I’d love to be a criminal profiler in the future and would like to better understand people’s psyche to help in any investigations. I chose to study criminology at AUT as the university seemed like a great place to create fun memories while also hoping to receive assistance in adjusting to university life, which I did.
“I chose to start with a Diploma in Arts to see if I’d actually enjoy studying criminology and to experience university life. I enjoyed the criminology pathway in the diploma as it enhanced my knowledge of how crime is defined and why people tend to commit criminal actions. Doing the diploma also helped me realise which courses I’ll need to take to achieve my dream job.”
Enjoying a new chapter
With her first year now firmly behind her, Tia has thoroughly enjoyed her studies so far.
“I enjoyed creating new friendships with my peers and appreciated the assistance provided by our lecturers. One service I’ve found to be tremendously helpful was the on-campus library – I was able to use the library for research and could use the computers for my assignments as my laptop was broken in my first semester.”
The freedom is another thing she loves about being a uni student.
“Being able to have more freedom than in high school has been great. I’ve loved being able to complete my work within my own time, rather than being told to complete certain sections of an assignment within class.”
Advice for other students
Tia has some great advice for other students who are starting their own university journey.
“Once you’ve adjusted to uni life and you have a scheduled routine, the work and assignments will become easier. Focus on your mental health before anything else. Never force an all-nighter or push yourself to appease others. You’re in control, even though in some ways you can be your own worst enemy.”
She wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT to other students.
“I’d recommend studying at AUT to others because there are various opportunities, you have more freedom with your deadlines, and AUT offers an environment where you can gain self-confidence within your assignments as well as improve your work ethic and motivation.”
