Lizza

2nd-year student, Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Modelling and Computation & Analytics
The interactive and hands-on learning approach is what she has enjoyed most about her studies, says Lizza who is studying mathematical modelling and computation, and analytics.
“I chose AUT because of its strong reputation for applied learning and its focus on preparing students for the real world. I like that AUT offers modern facilities, innovative teaching methods and industry-relevant course content.
“Through coding assignments, laboratory experiments, mathematical modelling projects and data analysis tasks I’ve been able to apply theory in meaningful ways. These experiences have helped me develop critical thinking, problem-solving and technical skills. I also enjoy the academic challenge, as it pushes me to constantly improve, stay disciplined and strive for excellence in my coursework.”
She is grateful for the support from AUT staff in her learning journey so far.
“The academic staff from the School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences have played an important role in supporting me. Their guidance, constructive feedback and encouragement have helped me strengthen my understanding of complex concepts and improve my academic performance. AUT’s student support services and learning resources have also helped me stay organised, manage my workload effectively and maintain a healthy study-life balance. One of my proudest achievements is maintaining consistent A+ grades across my courses, which reflects my dedication and commitment to academic excellence.”
Feeling inspired
Lizza says she has always been fascinated by numbers, patterns and logical thinking.
“From an early stage, I knew I wanted to study something that challenged me intellectually and allowed me to apply mathematics beyond textbooks. Analytics and mathematical modelling provide the perfect balance between theory and application. They allow me to analyse real datasets, build predictive models and develop computational solutions that can be used in technology, finance, science and research. After graduating, I’d love to pursue a career where I can apply my technical skills to solve real-world problems.”
Student life at AUT has been a very positive experience for her.
“I’ve enjoyed being part of a diverse and inclusive community where students from different backgrounds come together to learn and grow. I wanted to study at a university that not only focused on academic success but also encouraged personal growth and professional development, and AUT has provided that environment. The campus environment motivates me to stay focused, confident and inspired throughout my academic journey.
“I’ve also enjoyed taking part in leadership opportunities, and am extremely proud to have been selected for the Amokura Vice-Chancellor’s Leadership Programme, which recognises high-performing students with leadership potential. Being selected for this programme has motivated me to further develop my leadership skills and contribute positively to the AUT community.”
Advice for other students
Now in the second year of her studies, Lizza has some great advice for other students.
“My advice to other students is to stay consistent, believe in your abilities and never be afraid to ask for help. University life can be challenging, but with discipline, curiosity and perseverance, it becomes an incredibly rewarding experience.”
Make the most of your time at AUT, she adds.
“Take advantage of AUT’s academic support services, leadership programmes and learning opportunities, as these experiences can make a significant difference in both your personal and professional growth.”
