Natassha Joby

2nd-year student, Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Diploma in Engineering

For Natassha Joby, it was a recommendation from friends that led her to AUT and studying engineering.

“I had friends tell me that AUT provides more support for students and how well the university prepares students for real-world applications. I wasn’t entirely confident if engineering is something I should pursue, so I started my studies with the Diploma in Engineering instead of the bachelor’s degree to see if it was for me – and it was.

“I especially liked Professor Sarat Singamneni’s teaching style. He made every concept clear and provided tutorial lessons we can go back to. I’m proud of maintaining good grades despite the challenging courses, and enjoyed the skills workshops and the student support from the engineering staff. I was able to spend time completing my assignments and also ask for help if I needed it.”

Highly recommended
Natassha says she wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT to other students.

“I’d recommend studying at AUT because of all the student support and the many resources you can take advantage of. If you’re coming to AUT straight from high school, the transition is very easy. The City Campus itself is very lively, and there’s always something going on for students to enjoy.”

Making friends has been one of the highlights for her.

“Since I was new to New Zealand I was scared that I wouldn’t make any friends and would have to go through my studies alone, especially since I'm quite reserved. AUT makes it impossible for you to not have friends – through your lectures, group projects, tutorials and the events that happen throughout campus you’ll find an amazing community.”

Advice for other students
With the first year of her studies now firmly behind her, Natassha has some great advice for other students who are thinking about their own university journey.

“My advice is not to be afraid to ask for help, whether it’s related to assignments or the course material in general. The staff are there for a reason.”

She also has some specific advice around making friends.

“Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with someone. Even a quick smile can go a long way since there are many people who are looking for friends.”
