Joshua Taine Gudgin

4th-year student, Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Software Engineering

Ngāti Kahu

The hands-on aspects of his studies are the highlight for him, says Joshua Taine Gudgin who loves working on real-world software projects as part of his degree.

“I’ve always had an interest in technology, and being able to understand and create something impactful is a dream of mine. I particularly like the practical aspects of my degree as they help me apply what I’ve learnt in class and solve practical problems that may not come up in theoretical environments. I’ve found this especially rewarding.”

He has also enjoyed the environment of the AUT City Campus.

“There are so many places to explore and hang out at. Everyone there – students and staff alike – is open and friendly. AUT does an amazing job at supporting students, and making them feel welcome and seen throughout their studies. The support from my peers and lecturers has made the learning experience so much more enjoyable, and I’m proud to have been asked to help others through our peer mentor programme and by being a teaching assistant. It’s inspiring to be in an environment where everyone is actually invested in helping each other succeed.”

Supported to thrive
He is proud to have been awarded a Tū Ātea Scholarship for Māori Engineering Students to support his studies, says Joshua who hopes to work in networks and cybersecurity once he graduates and would like to be an ambassador for Māori in technology.

“Receiving this scholarship has massively boosted my confidence overall and in my studies. I feel more motivated than ever to work hard in my studies and inspire others to do the same. Being able to receive a scholarship from Tū Ātea is one of the achievements I’m most proud of in my studies so far.”

There are a few AUT staff whose support he has particularly appreciated.

“Dr Hazel Abraham has been amazing to me and has given me opportunities I’ve never thought I'd have access to. Her support and encouragement have boosted my confidence throughout my studies. Sandelyn Agnes Su Kuan Lua has also been awesome – she has done an amazing job in making sure everything has gone smoothly through class and course transitions, and her support for the peer mentor programme has helped immensely.”

Advice for other students
Expecting to complete his studies later this year, Joshua has some great advice for other students.

“Don’t be afraid to ask anyone for help, whether it's about studies, finance, your personal life, mental health or anything else. There are some things even AI can’t help with, and AUT has so many support systems in place for you that you may not have even heard of.”

He would highly recommend studying engineering at AUT.

“AUT has a great environment that maintains its professionalism while also being open and supportive to students.”
