For Jitong Li, studying the AUT Academic English Course (AUT AE) at the AUT English Language Centre was the perfect way to start her studies in New Zealand.
“I really like the relaxed teaching atmosphere at the AUT English Language Centre, as well as the patient guidance and help provided by the teachers. This learning experience helps students better adapt to the new environment and studying in Auckland.”
She says the skills she developed during her English language course gave her a good basis for the Master of Business Management she is studying now.
“Beyond improving my language proficiency, I acquired essential academic skills. From academic writing and project implementation to how to do research, these skills laid a solid foundation for postgraduate-level work.”

Jitong – who came to AUT as an international student from China – says she would highly recommend the AUT English Language Centre to other students.
“I often talk to my classmates about my experiences at the English Language Centre and how the skills I learned there apply to my postgraduate courses. I’ve also recommended the AUT Academic English Course (AUT AE) to my friend who plans to study at AUT.”
There were a few English Language Centre staff whose support she particularly appreciated.
“All of the lecturers and staff are very supportive and offer patient guidance, especially Lindsay Spedding and Jonny Crook from the English Language Centre. I faced some visa issues when I first started, and their unwavering support during that stressful time truly touched me.”

Now studying a Master of Business Management at AUT, Jitong loves the practical focus of her master’s degree.
“The programme integrates real-world applications, like industry projects and case studies, which has helped me bridge classroom learning with professional skills. The workshops have helped me refine my problem-solving and teamwork abilities.
“I also appreciate that AUT offers a wealth of academic resources, free academic guidance and career counselling services, which takes care of everything from studying to daily life. Due to the support that is always available, I can focus on my study rather than stress and anxiety.”
She has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university journey.
