He loves that his job allows him to be both strategic and hands-on, says business alumnus Jason Baxendine who now works for payment processing platform Stripe in Singapore.

“As the head of strategy and operations for start ups and SMBs, I’m responsible for overseeing the growth and success of these businesses. I work closely with my team to identify and implement strategies that will drive business growth, improve operational efficiency and increase customer satisfaction. I also work with stakeholders and senior management to ensure that the strategies we put in place align with the overall goals of the company.”

Jason is proud of the many successful business transformations he has been a part of over the years.

“Whether it was improving operational efficiency, increasing customer satisfaction or driving growth, I’ve always felt a deep sense of satisfaction when I saw the results of my work. I enjoy the challenge of finding solutions to complex problems and the satisfaction of seeing my work have a direct impact on the success of the businesses I work with.”

Building a strong foundation
He was always interested in the intersection between business, creativity and technology, says Jason who graduated from AUT in 2013 with a Bachelor of Business in Advertising and Marketing, and a Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Marketing.

“Marketing and advertising seemed like the perfect fit for my interests, and AUT is known for having a strong reputation in this field. The university offered a range of hands-on, practical learning opportunities and industry connections I knew would benefit me. I still remember one of my lecturers talking about how marketing and analytics could be used to drive growth and success in a business. From that moment on, I knew that I wanted to focus on these areas in my career.”

Being able to gain workplace experience as part of his degree was one of the highlights for Jason.

“I loved working on real-life projects with a local company, MediaWorks TV, as part of my coursework. This gave me a taste of what it was like to work in the industry, and enabled me to network and build my portfolio. Another highlight was the close-knit community of marketing and advertising students. We were all passionate about our field and we learned a lot from each other, both inside and outside the classroom.”

Advice for other students
Jason’s advice for other students is simple: be open-minded and curious.

“Don't be afraid to explore different areas and to try new things. Building a career isn’t just about getting a job; it's about finding something that you’re passionate about and that you can excel at.”

Make the most of your time at university, he adds.

“While you’re studying at AUT, take advantage of all the opportunities available to you, whether that be through coursework, internships or extracurricular activities. And most importantly, never stop learning and growing.”
