2nd-year student, Bachelor of Construction in Construction Management

For Asinate Telefoni, her passion for the building industry started in childhood and eventually led her to AUT’s Bachelor of Construction in Construction Management.

“I grew up being familiar with the industry as my dad was a project manager in the civil engineering industry for years before running his own business, contracting to other companies. I found that interesting, and am now pursuing my studies in the field. I previously worked in the industry under my dad, and could see how miscommunication between the management team and engineers can cause project delays. That is something I can take into consideration when I start working in my chosen field.”

While she still has another year of her studies ahead, she already has a good idea of how she sees her future after graduation.

“I’d love to pursue a career in a management role for the rail industry after I graduate. In the long run I’d like to migrate to Australia to pursue a career. Before I came to AUT, I studied at Unitec and I know that with the shift to AUT, my qualification will be recognised in Australia.”

Supported to thrive
Now in the second year of her degree, Asinate has thoroughly enjoyed her studies so far and is proud of the good grades she has been receiving.

“I’ve enjoyed the encouragement from AUT staff. I also enjoy how classes and assignments are set out. It’s very well organised which makes doing my work much easier. I’ve appreciated that you can get a three-day extension for an assignment if needed – that has helped me when several assignments were due on the same day.”

There are a few staff whose support she has particularly appreciated.

“Dr Lara Tookey has been a huge support and I appreciated her giving me specific feedback on areas I could improve in. Dr Dat Doan talked me through the course ENBU777, so that I was aware of the requirements early as it’s compulsory to complete this course in order to graduate. I’d also like to give special recognition to Sameera Menezes and Jerome Halago for always encouraging me to do my best and helping in any areas I need support with. They’ve helped me with my transition to AUT and the recognition of prior learning process.”

Advice for other students
Asinate – who is of Tongan descent, with connections to the villages of Lakepa and Vaini Tongatapu – has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university journey.

“I’d advise students to not be shy and always ask questions. No question is a wrong question if you're willing to know and learn. Reach out when help is needed because there is always someone out there that will help. And finally, try your best in all areas.”

She wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT to others.

“I’d recommend studying at AUT because of how well everything is set out via Canvas and because staff genuinely care when you reach out for help related to your assignments and classwork. There are also mentors you can seek help from. This can be helpful as the mentors are students themselves and have been in your shoes.”
