Austria-NZ collab centres on research
Austria’s TU Wien (Technische Universität Wien) and Auckland University of Technology (AUT) have signed an agreement to develop a collaboration to enable joint research and partnership in Horizon Europe proposals, build and share capacity, foster curriculum innovation, influence policy, and enhance international visibility.
The agreement will emphasis staff exchanges and work together on research programmes and funding applications.
Collaboration is a key driver of both universities of technology with a recognition that international research have a direct impact on innovation and outcomes.
To initiate this collaboration, AUT will support three in-bound and three out-bound research fellowships between AUT and TUW over the coming year.
Emphasising the strategic importance of the partnership, Peter Ertl, Vice Rector at TU Wien, highlighted how the collaboration aligns with the university’s internationalisation strategy, which aims to strengthen long-term, high-impact research networks beyond Europe and position TU Wien as a globally connected university of technology.
“International collaboration is an impact pillar of TU Wien’s research profile. Our partnership with Auckland University of Technology brings together complementary strengths and shared values, enabling us to address global challenges through joint research, mobility, and innovation. Working with AUT allows us to expand our international footprint while creating tangible benefits for researchers, students, and society,” Ertl said.
AUT’s Dean and Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Suzanne Wilkinson welcomed the opportunity to join forces with a university whose mission of ‘Technology for People’ aligns so closely with AUT.
“AUT’s vision is to enrich lives and create a better world through technology, learning and discovery – the agreement with TU Wien is an excellent opportunity and we look forward to working with like-minded colleagues who share our passion for innovation,” she said.
An MOU has been signed between AUT and TU Wien on Monday 11 May 2026, at the New Zealand Official Residence in Vienna, with Ambassador Andrew Williams noting the value of collaboration between the two countries.
“This year marks 70 years of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and Austria. Despite our geographical distance, Austria and New Zealand make great partners. It is great to see these two outstanding institutions at the cutting edge of research and innovation establish this partnership together.”
