AUT Library operates at the centre of academic life at the University and plays a vital role in supporting students and staff through their learning, teaching, and research journeys. Spread across three campuses, six teams, and over 90 staff, AUT Library is one of the largest divisions at AUT. Our staff engage with an increasingly diverse and complex array of work, from collection management and online resources, to academic writing, information literacy, and user experience.

AUT Library’s mission

Our mission is to create great graduates by supporting students and academics in their learning, teaching and research journeys through in-person and online services, resources, information and training.

Our teams, roles and skills

The Collections team is responsible for providing seamless access to resources in support of AUT’s teaching, learning and research goals. Their portfolio of work focuses on:

  • Collection development
  • Course resources and reading lists
  • Acquisition of information resources
  • Management of information resources, metadata and licensing
  • Metadata quality of research outputs via Research Elements
  • Interlibrary loans and services to distance students
  • Special Collections (material that reflects the history of AUT)

The Learning Success team works closely with lecturers and students to ensure students have the academic literacies needed to succeed at university. They do this through:

  • Creating multi-modal resources (face-to-face, workshops, videos, etc.)
  • Providing embedded subject specific workshops into curriculum
  • Conducting workshops for academic skills’ development
  • Providing one-to-one sessions with students
  • Conducting close collaboration with academic staff
  • Undertaking user research and active engagement with research and publishing work

Library Community Engagement (LCE) is the Library’s frontline team and often the first point of contact for students and staff. Interconnected with other Library teams and AUT services, LCE help customers to navigate Library spaces, collections and resources, plus other AUT support services. Their key responsibilities include:

  • Management of Library learning spaces
  • Providing help to find and use Library resources
  • Studio 55 (makerspace at City Library)
  • Engagement activities (eg displays, tours, activities)
  • Referrals to Library and AUT services

The Online and Open Initiatives team work to ensure that students and staff get the best out of their online library experience. With a focus on openness and developing innovative solutions, their most important tasks are:

  • Design, implementation, maintenance and development of Library online spaces, including the website, search, discovery and delivery, and Tuwhera (AUT's open access platform)
  • User experience and research activities and support across the Library
  • Promotion and enabling of open access across AUT
  • Support of Library specific hardware and software
  • The AUT Institutional Repository – theses and research outputs
  • Authentication systems for online resources
  • Hosting and managing open journals and books at AUT
  • System integrations

People and Planning support the external and internal business of the Library, including:

  • Communications (internal communications to staff, social media, advice)
  • Copyright and open access advice
  • Business metrics and performance support and advice
  • Executive support to Library leadership
  • HR and staff engagement
  • Quality assurance, business continuity and records management

The Research and Academic Engagement (RAE) team provides services across the University through our liaison librarians, who act as key contacts for the Library to AUT’s academic schools and departments. The RAE team’s work includes:

  • Research support and advice (including research metrics and impact)
  • Reference management training (EndNote, Zotero, Mendeley)
  • Provision of information literacy education
  • Provision of workshops and embedded learning in courses
  • Recommendations of relevant resources to faculties

As the learning, teaching and research needs of students and staff continually change, the role of academic libraries is to provide up-to-date access to necessary information and resources. To meet these needs, the required skills for any Library role include:
