Estates Group (where you could work at AUT)

The Estates Group manages the planning, development and maintenance of AUT’s built environment and its safety, security, transport and hospitality functions. We have 240 staff broadly divided into two groups – the Property team and Hospitality Services.

Estates Group's mission

Our goal is to provide students and staff with attractive, functional campuses and facilities with inspiring work and learning spaces.

Property team

The largest part of the Estates Group, the Property team keeps the University running day to day and also undertakes construction on behalf of AUT. They ensure the entire AUT property portfolio (across three campuses) is maintained, complies with all building codes and standards, is cleaned, landscaped and is running adequately to accommodate AUT’s 3,000 staff and 30,000 students.

The Property team consists of 6 distinct areas.

Our teams, roles and skills

  • The Facilities Management team: campus operations managers, in-house tradespeople, grounds maintenance team
  • The Transport Services team manages all of the University’s car and bike parking, plus the AUT shuttle buses that run between our campuses
  • The Energy Conservation and Sustainability Teams are charged with reducing the University’s energy intensity in all of our buildings in order for us to meet our sustainability targets and objectives. They also lead the University in terms of sustainability initiatives, and work with key partners to achieve our sustainability goals.
  • The Security team work hard to ensure everyone’s safety while on campus. Their job extends to both staff and students and they are key players in emergency and crisis situations.
  • The Space Planning and Timetabling team have the huge task of allocating all of the University’s space for teaching and learning, and ensuring that space is used as efficiently as possible. This team has made AUT one of the most space efficient universities in Australasia.
  • The Projects Team are responsible for delivering the minor and major capital works projects that AUT budgets for each year. Minor capital works include things like lift upgrades, new HVAC systems and small building projects. This team also works closely with AUT’s Council on the Capital Asset Management Plan to design, build and deliver major new buildings. They are also involved with the property masterplan and the strategy around how AUT’s campuses will evolve in the future.

Commercial Services

Commercial Services is the team responsible for running all AUT cafes, catering and events services.

They manage several in-house catering venues as well as the commercial leases for around 30 other service providers including shops, cafes, coffee kiosks and even an Auckland Transport Customer Service Centre.

This group also manages hundreds of in-house events on behalf of AUT as well as conferences and events for external organisations each year.

Working together to find solutions

Although a large directorate, staff in the Estates Group are masters of working together. You can’t paint classrooms without rescheduling classes to another room; new building projects need input from Hospitality Services around the inclusion of cafes, plus the timetabling team to ensure space is suitably allocated; and maintenance or building work can affect car parking. In all of these situations, the different teams within the Estates Group work together to find solutions.
