Staff benefits

At AUT, we value people and their time because our staff are key to our success. A genuine work/life balance is important, and we’re committed to supporting your professional and personal development.

As an employee at AUT you can expect many benefits and services.

Free study

Our staff may be eligible to study for free under the Nil Fees Scheme.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
  • Be a permanent staff member working at least 0.6 FTE (or equivalent)
  • Have manager approval for work-related study

Your study must be part of a Ministry-funded programme (not a short course) and excludes:

  • Professional Postgraduate Programmes from the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law (Research Postgraduate Programmes are included under the Nil Fees Scheme)
  • All AUT Online programmes
  • PhD extensions (requires approval to be funded by your department or school)

Please note: Programmes excluded from the Nil Fees Scheme are subject to change. We recommend checking with your manager when considering study at AUT. Any costs beyond tuition must be covered by the staff member (either personally or through professional development funds).

Professional development at AUT

We support professional development as a shared commitment between AUT and our people, built on mutual benefit and direct relevance to your role. Permanent staff receive dedicated time and funding to maintain and grow their skills. For academic staff, this includes development as educators and researchers. For all staff, it covers training related to your role, including opportunities such as academic study and conference attendance in your professional field. Fixed-term staff may also access appropriate development opportunities, depending on the length of their appointment and the requirements of their role.

Flexible working arrangements

We may offer flexible work options where practical:

  • Part time hours
  • Temporary or casual work
  • Flexi time
  • Job sharing
  • Working from home
  • Generous leave allowances

Special leave schemes

Permanent full-time employees can also apply for a special leave scheme where you work for a specific period at 80% pay. You then get a period of paid leave.

These options are ‘Four for five’ (work for 4 years, followed by a year’s leave) and ‘Two for two-and-a-half’ (work for 2 years, followed by 6 months’ leave).

Free AUT gym membership

You can use AUT’s three gyms and fitness centres for free if you’re a permanent member of staff. This includes group fitness classes.
