High Performance Computing Research Laboratory (HPCRL) was formed at the end of 2014, primarily as the hub for high performance computing projects in New Zealand. The current key project underway is an exascale supercomputer design for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).

The HPCRL also works on other research and industry projects / initiatives aligned with these technologies, including big data processing, mobile technologies, signal processing and low power computing.

The main objectives of the HPCRL:

  • Provide a center for specialist resources to work out of, for the SKA project.
  • Create team collaboration for staff, post graduate students, specialists and technical resources working on high performance computing projects and initiatives.
  • Raise initiatives, projects and research proposals for high end computing solutions, dealing with solving supercomputing problems, both for academic and industry.
  • Liaise with international organisations on future HPC technologies.
