Yu Zhu (Antony)

Master of Computer and Information Sciences student
AUT Academic English Course (AUT AE)

When Yu Zhu (Antony) came to New Zealand from China, one of his first steps towards postgraduate study at AUT was completing the AUT Academic English Course (AUT AE). For Antony, the course was a chance to develop the academic English skills he would need for his master’s degree, while also getting used to a new style of learning.

“What I liked most about studying at the English Language Centre was the teaching style. Instead of just passively listening to the teacher, we took part in a variety of activities, including group discussions, presentations and games. These activities were fun and engaging, and they helped me learn in a relaxed environment and remember what I learned more easily. Through the AUT Academic English Course (AUT AE), I gained several valuable skills, including academic writing, thesis writing, APA referencing, critical thinking and presentation skills. These skills have been very helpful in my master’s degree at AUT, especially when writing academic reports, researching topics, analysing information critically, and presenting my ideas clearly and confidently.”

He wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the AUT English Language Centre to other students.

“I’d highly recommend AUT’s English language programmes, especially to students like me, who have no previous background in academic English. The programme not only helped me improve my English skills but also prepared me well for my master’s degree at AUT. Almost every course requires students to write reports or academic papers, and without learning academic writing skills beforehand, students could lose marks unnecessarily. I believe the AUT Academic English Course (AUT AE) gives students a strong foundation for their future studies.”

Building skills for his future
Since completing his AUT Academic English Course (AUT AE) in mid-2026, Antony has started AUT’s Master of Computer and Information Sciences and is thoroughly enjoying his studies so far.

“What I’ve enjoyed most about my master’s degree at AUT is the opportunity to apply what I learn to practical projects, especially in areas related to AI and software engineering. I enjoy exploring new technologies, solving real-world problems and developing my critical thinking skills. These experiences have helped me connect theory with practice and broaden my knowledge.

“Apart from my studies, I’ve really enjoyed taking part in a wide range of AUT activities, including outdoor adventures, career and recruitment events, industry forums, food-tasting events, and cultural and historical activities. Through these experiences, I’ve made many new friends and gained a deeper understanding of New Zealand’s local culture, history, job market and beautiful scenery. These activities have greatly enriched my student life and made my experience at AUT more enjoyable and rewarding.”

Expecting to complete his studies in 2027, he also has a good idea of how he sees his future after graduation.

“I have many years of experience in software testing and quality assurance, and I’d love to continue working in this field after graduation. I hope to apply the knowledge and skills I’m gaining at AUT to my future career, especially in areas such as test automation, software quality engineering and AI-assisted testing.”

Advice for other students
Antony has some great advice for other international students.

“My advice is not to spend too much time at home while you’re studying in Auckland – get out and take part in different activities. Join a variety of events, including industry forums, academic activities, sports, outdoor adventures, cultural events and volunteer activities. Make an effort to meet new people and make friends. These experiences will help you understand New Zealand from different perspectives, discover new opportunities, and contribute to the local community. Most importantly, get involved in local life and make the most of your time here. Studying abroad isn’t just about getting a degree, but also about exploring, learning and experiencing a new way of life.”

He also appreciated the support he received from AUT when he first arrived in New Zealand.

“Rosalind King from the English Language Centre was a great support to me. She is not only an experienced teacher but also a very kind and friendly person who always greets students with a smile. Whenever I struggled or felt I wasn’t doing well, she encouraged me and helped me regain my confidence. Her kindness and encouragement made a real difference, helping me adjust more quickly to studying and living in New Zealand when I first arrived. I’m truly grateful for her support.”
